Calli: Maroczy's Morphy book has "Th. Knight". Thomas? Theodore?

As <Swindler> said on the game page:

"According to my copy of Seargent's "Morphy's games of chess" this was an odds game, with Morphy giving the odds of both the queens knight and the queens rook. Also, the player was <T Knight>, not A Knight."

p.345, game CCC (it's the last game of the book)

Calli: <WS> Thanks, I didn't check the game page. The earliest publication of this game that I could find is Max Lange's Edition 3rd edition (Leipzig, 1894). Herr Lange also gives "Th Knight". Maroczy probably got the game from Lange's book. Somewhat mysterious that the game would suddenly appear in 1894, so I suspect there is an original publication, perhaps in a newspaper that has not been found.

"A Knight" was, I think, one of Sam Loyd's funny aliases. Thought this might be him but the New Orleans location and the large odds seem to negate that possibility.

Jul-18-08  Jim Bartle: Even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under considerable economic stress in this period in history.

whiteshark: <Calli> We shouldn't miss to ask <Miss Morphy> User: sbc

A quick search on her site: http://batgirl.atspace.com/

only resulted in http://batgirl.atspace.com/sacs.html, referring to this game is <Bishop sacs no. 8>

Calli: In fact, I vaguely remember discussing this game with User: ckr and SBC when we searched for more complete information on Morphy's opponents. Mainly looking for forenames, birth dates and death dates. "Th Knight" was as far as we got. Maroczy also gives "Th Lichtenhein" whose first name was Theodor, but we cannot be sure he even knows Knight's first name.
Dec-24-08  WhiteRook48: A Knight cannot mate Morphy.
Mar-07-09  WhiteRook48: my kingdom for A Knight!
Jul-25-09  myschkin: . . .

Disciplina clericalis *

".. Probitates vero hae sunt: Equitare, natare, sagittare, cestibus certare, aucupare, <scaccis ludere>, versificari. .."

(by Petri Alfonsi, ~ 1115)

~ In his work he listed chess among the seven skills that a <good knight> must acquire!

Unfortunately he says nothing about bad bishops ...
