Domdaniel: Stoering has never quite made it to the top, but he's an interesting player: we should have more of his games. He's a survivalist, tenuous and tough in defence, good at holding on in lost positions. Some of his draws (eg that vs Jackelen in 1996) are true feats of survival.

There are at least two kinds of Drawmeisters: the boring ones who play for equality, and the fingernail-clingers, the ones who make you shake your head and ask how on earth the guy survived.

Wolfgang Heidenfeld's classic book on *Remispartien* features many of this latter type, and Stoering is qualified to join them.

Such games might help dispel the common prejudice against draws.

Jul-24-13  tjipa: In his book about Caro-Kann, Anatoly Karpov quotes his game against Brunner. Stoering lost that, though showed some of the above described qualities. Yet, looks like he has played no rated tournaments since at least 2001.
