Jan-02-07  sirGeoff: Thomas Avery was twice Lord Mayor of Birmingham, and was the 'T' in the world-famous weights and scales firm of 'W & T Avery'. I think he was also the president of the Birmingham chess club.
Jul-31-15  thomastonk: There is a nice article on the 'Birmingham Chess Club' by E.Gambit(!) in the 'Chess Amateur', 1907, p 230, which describes also Avery's merits.

Avery was okay until 23.. f5?. 23.. f6 would have given him a save extra-pawn.
