He was born on 11 November 1988 in Lvov, Ukraine. He started to play chess in 1998. Became IM in 2004. FIDE awarded the GM title to Yuri Vovk in 2008. This GM is a brother of Andrey Vovk. Winner of Cappelle la Grande (2009). Placed 5th with 7.5/11 at the European Championship (2015), thereby qualifying for the World Cup (2015) where he defeated Ray Robson in the first round. He lost to Wei Yi in the blitz tiebreakers after the standard games and the two sets of rapid tiebreakers were drawn and therefore exited the event. He took part in the World Blitz Championship 2015. Being ranked 113th Yuriy took 9th place. He faced for the first time many top players. Yuri defeated Aronian, Movsesian, Vachier-Lagrave, Wojtaszek, Malakhov, and drew with Carlsen, Leko, Gelfand and Svidler.

He was equal third at the 33rd Andorra Open 2015. Winner of the 6th Salento International Chess Open 2017. (Gallipoli,Italy.) Winner of the Leine International Rapid Chess Open 2017 ( Hannover, Germany.) Second place at the international chess festival, "Open Cup of Lvov 2018" Tournament A. Winner of the 15th Vasylyshyn Memorial GM Tournament 2018 (Lvov, Ukraine). Second place at the 16th Vasylyshyn Memorial 2019.
