Liu scored 6/9 against 7 GMs and 2 IMs at the Asian Continental Chess Championship (2012) which enabled him to place 4th, thereby qualifying to play in the World Cup (2013) and to acquire a GM norm. At the World Cup, he met Wang Hao in the first round, but lost his match and exited the contest.
