   May-24-06 German Championship (2004)

SJP: <why snooker?> The proletariat watch it. They wouldn't watch chess and consequently the BBC would lose a lot of money and ratings.

May-21-06 Blackburne vs Wylde, 1875 (replies)

SJP: Nice play. Black is mated by force: pretty obviously, 16...Qxe7 is followed by 17. Qg8#; 16...Qg8 17. Qxg8#; 16...Qf8 17. Qxf8+ Kh7 18. Bd3+ g6 19. Qf7+ Kh8 20. Bf6#; 16...Qe8 17. Qxe8+ Kh7 18. Bd3+ g6 19. Qxg6+ Kh8 20. Qh7# or 20. Bf6#.

May-20-06 Napoleon Bonaparte vs Madame De Remusat, 1804 (replies)

SJP: How could a player as good as this (in this game) lose so badly to the Turk? It's probably not just shell shock. Something smells fishy here...

   May-20-06 A Pearsall vs F Ruys, 1947

SJP: This is <extremely> similar to Euwe vs Reti, 1920. The latter unleashes the beautiful 17...Bh3!!, and forces a win quickly.

   May-20-06 P Alewijn Faure vs R Schortinghuis, 1899

SJP: Nice finish from Faure; White clearly threatens mate on the back rank: 22. Rxa8 (or Qxa8) Rxa8 23. Qxa8+ Bc8 24. Re8#. Taking the Queen gives: 21...Rxb7 22. Rxa8+ Bc8 23. Re8# (the Rook can interpose, but that's just being stubborn). With best defence, 21...Rf8 22. Rxa8 Bc8 23. Qxc7, ...

   May-19-06 La Bourdonnais vs A D'Arblay, 1830 (replies)

SJP: I handle main chess board's rouleau

May-19-06 La Bourdonnais vs McDonnell, 1834 (replies)

SJP: <knight13> so which line of the Italian game d you like best? For me, its the Two Knights, the 5. d4 line.

   May-18-06 Shirov vs C Hoi, 1991 (replies)

SJP: <seethamraju> Simply, 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 without 3...d5

   May-17-06 McDonnell vs J Finch, 1830 (replies)

SJP: This position actually occurred in a game I played a few years back: Pinder - Bhogal Walsall 2001 King's Gambit Accepted; Classical 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 g5 4. Bc4 Bg7 5. 0-0 Qe7 6. Nc3 c6 7. e5 Qc5+ 8. d4 Qxc4 9. Ne4 Bf8 10. Nfxg5 d5 11. b3 Qb4 12. c3 Qa5 13. Qh5 Nh6 14. Nd6+ ...

May-17-06 McDonnell vs La Bourdonnais, 1834 (replies)

SJP: <sneaky pete> 20. Rd1+ is not clumsy if followed by 20...Qd6. There is a forced mate with 21. Rxd6+! cxd6 22. Nd5+ Kd7 23. Qg7+ Kc6 24. Qc3+ Kb5 25. a4+ Ka6 26. Nc7+ Kb6 27. a5# but 21. Qxc5+ does mate more quickly.
