Jan-22-21 Kavalek vs Karpov, 1970 (replies)

Albanius: RIP Lubosh! https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/22/... Apparently chessgames.com originally posted the variation with 23 Nxg7! but later corrected it with the actual game as played.

   Jan-01-21 W So vs Vachier-Lagrave, 2020 (replies)

Albanius: In the grand tradition of French anticlericalism - Voltaire would be proud. Ecrasez l'infame!

   Dec-19-20 Lasker vs Steinitz, 1895

Albanius: Gunsberg's note criticizing Steinitz's 10..Qe8 after Lasker's now standard Nf1 gives the lemon 13 Bb3 which runs into ..c4 Bc2 Nxc2, trading off the Spanish B which W has moved 5x. Lasker would no doubt have met 12..Nb4 with 13 Bb1, keeping the usual advantage in space.

   Dec-19-20 Gelfand vs Kramnik, 1994

Albanius: 25 ..f6! appears to hold. 26 Rxf6? Bxe3+! 27 Rxe3 Rxf6 overloading the W Q.

Nov-07-20 Botvinnik vs Smyslov, 1958 (replies)

Albanius: The opening is correctly classified here as Reti Opening, London system, indeed a textbook example of the line. But in it is wrongly listed "English with b3" on the chessgames.com page for the match: Smyslov - Botvinnik World Championship Rematch (1958)

   Sep-08-20 J H Donner vs Larsen, 1970 (replies)

Albanius: 13..Qh4 ^ 14 Nf3?? Ng3# is met by Ne2 defending g3 and hitting Bd4.

   Aug-01-20 Kramnik vs Kasparov, 1995

Albanius: danielpi: "After Kramnik vs Kasparov, 1995 and this game, Kramnik stopped using the Petrosian system." This game was no reason to abandon the Petrosian System -- Vlad got the advantage after 14 b4! which IIRC was a TN at the time. W was somewhat better through move 22 at least. ...

Jul-23-20 Anand vs Kramnik, 2020 (replies)

Albanius: After an epic struggle, Anand could have won with 63 Nf4!, according to the commentators and stockfish here. Instead, he hung the N to a double attack, losing immediately.

   Jul-16-20 Anand vs Nepomniachtchi, 2020

Albanius: Carlsen was also busted after 14 moves as B in this variation, in a slightly different position: A Giri vs Carlsen, 2020 Chessable Masters final (rapid) after 14 ..Be6? allowing 15 Qh6! +- but Giri missed it and played 15 Bxe6?, eventually drawing.

Jun-30-20 Ding Liren vs Nakamura, 2020 (replies)

Albanius: Nakamura has been known to play better in the KID: W So vs Nakamura, 2015

(replies) indicates a reply to the comment.
