   Apr-25-04 Schlechter vs J Mieses, 1909 (replies)
Carroll: Why play Bd3 instead of Bxe6?
   Apr-25-04 Michael Basman (replies)
Carroll: Why isn't Basman's win against Mecking a notable game here? Why isn't the game even on this site. It is in my Keene book called "Battles of Hastings". I think it is Basman's most famous game.
   Apr-25-04 M Basman vs Miles, 1981 (replies)
Carroll: There is a concrete reason that Basman, the only IM Grobist, plays h3 after d5. He wants to avoid the gambit continuation (I forget the name, maybe Zilberment's) Bg2 Bxg4 c4 dxc4 Bxb7 Nd7 Bxa8 where black is the one who has all the fun.
   Apr-25-04 M Basman vs Keene, 1981 (replies)
Carroll: I had no idea Basman was almost as old as Fischer, Jesus.
   Apr-23-04 V Kuksov vs Baburin, 1986 (replies)
Carroll: This game deserves some applause. Well done, Baburin is pretty damn strong.
   Apr-13-04 Eduard Gufeld (replies)
Carroll: He must have been joking. I was Gufeld's student for many years and he charged 75 an hour---and I must say the money was well spent; I learned things about chess from him that I couldn't imagine having come to know otherwise. Gufeld was a great and underappreciated artist of the ...
Apr-13-04 Fischer vs Auner, 1960 (replies)
Carroll: exd6 Qxd6 Nd7 e5 and I do not think the King can survive in the center. Also e5 immediately without Qxd6 might be an idea but it is clearly not needed as e5 must be winning.
Apr-13-04 Sicilian, Dragon Variation (B70) (replies)
Carroll: I heard on that Rb8 in response to Bc4 is popular now---that this is the new Chinese variation. Does anybody know about this line---it seems to have almost no theory at this point.
Apr-13-04 Bronstein vs Fischer, 1960 (replies)
Carroll: Rc3 looks very interesting followed by possibly Qe2 and Bh6.It seems as if Fischer should have had an edge. This game is very interesting, and I think I went over it once in a collection of Bronstein's games, but it deserves to be better known.
Apr-13-04 Nimzowitsch vs Capablanca, 1927 (replies)
Carroll: Yeah, I think you are right Tamar. The very first move that came to mind when looking at this and realising g4 is bad was Bf2; and everybody seems to think that is best from Reinfeld to Kasparov. It seems black should have played Rc1 with the idea of c4 much earlier.
