Started playing chess as a kid off and on. Learned how to play by playing against my great uncle in the nursing home. He suffered from MS and was blind in one eye and still managed to whoop me. He told me his teacher was a step away from being a GM and had a nervous breakdown. As a result, his teacher couldn't look at a board but instead would look out the window while my uncle called out the moves. (Maybe if I couldn't see, I would play better chess as half the time I think I'm blind over the board I make so many blunders.)

Thus began my love affair and fascination with the game. I have picked it up off and on several times but am always inspired and encouraged by the feeling that comes with out-thinking and out-playing an opponent. It is a natural high that can't be found or reproduced by any pharmaceutical company.

FabrikaLaHun: Here's what GM Sokolov himself says after 27.Qh5 <This is the position I had to evaluate when I opted for the intuitive sacrifice started with h6! It was impossible for me to calculate everything, but I had a number of reasons to trust my intuition: A) the attackers vs ...

FabrikaLaHun: Spent a good five minutes trying to find the Monday "easy" win for white but couldn't find anything solid or forcing. Who else missed the Black to Play besides me? (and <Moonwalker>)

FabrikaLaHun: Did I miss something? I thought chessgames mod said this week was Vishy week and that we had some really challenging puzzles ahead for us. I give the puzzle here to spell Vishy from the names of the players?....let's see V--I--S--H--Y....okay, done. A--n--a--n.... hmm, ...

FabrikaLaHun: So I saw Nxf7 for white and how it would attack rook and Queen. I guess I was first stuck on Ba4+ since I was looking for forcing know, patzer see check, patzer make check? I even said to myself, "Gee, it would be great if he would respond by Kd8...but I guess he ...

FabrikaLaHun: Thought this was a great combination by black. He's down 2 pawns. Certainly, clearance should not be on his mind, but that is what it seems he does when he takes with the Queen at c1. I wanted to move the knight to e2 right away instead thinking that even if Qxe2, I'd be able ...

FabrikaLaHun: Congrats <LTJ> on 1000 posts. Got this one today. Just had to think a bit about the move order. Anyone else think it was a bit suicidal for white to castle king's side on move 18 with both rooks staring straight down 2 semi-open files? Then again, checked the archives and

FabrikaLaHun: <LTJ>, Good call! Can't say I completely understand this one though I did find the rook sac and the Queen check for white. Didn't know where it would lead to but thought it was strong. Wouldn't have found the bishop move. I haven't completely figured out the win but I'm
   Mar-12-12 P Ricardi vs G Milos, 2001 (replies)
FabrikaLaHun: Shouldn't take more than a second to see 28 Qf8+. After ...Rxf8 29Rxf8 is mate! Moving the knight on move 27 to "attack" the Rook allowed it to roam free on the back rank. This is a typical theme from Bobby Fisher Teaches Chess.

FabrikaLaHun: <<Phony Benoni>But now we see that Black's Be7 is exposed> Thank you for your direct explanation. While it might have been obvious to others, I still didn't see (in my head) why Nxc6 wins a piece until I read your explanation. Still not so easy for me to work out ...
