Jun-11-08 Spassky vs Smyslov, 1953 (replies)

HNP: What a brilliant game by Spassky! I wonder at what point Smyslov realized that he wasn't the one attacking... Interesting that although Black has a light-squared bishop that is not blocked by pawns, it is White who controls the light-squares owing to his active pieces and control of the

   Mar-03-08 Spielmann vs M Walter, 1928 (replies)

HNP: Thanks for Spielmann's annotations, <zb2cr>.

   Feb-28-08 Vladimirov vs V Vorotnikov, 1974 (replies)

HNP: White's failure is strategic as well as tactical. He obviously imagined he was attacking with 16.Bb4, but attacks from inferior positions usually fail. He should have been looking to shore up his kingside with 16.f4 (when, however, 16...Nf4+!? looks tempting.)

Feb-28-08 Karpov vs Kasparov, 1993 (replies)

HNP: <Notagm>If 18.Qxb4 Ne3 attacks the rook and threatens to fork king and queen.

Feb-13-08 Kasparov vs Tukmakov, 1982 (replies)

HNP: Well, I didn't get this myself! 43.Bc7!! is a brilliant resource (43...b8=Q?? 44. Qxe6+ mates and 43..Qxc7? 44.Qf8#). But how far back did Kasparov see this? Stunning play by the future world champ, then only 17-18 years old.

Feb-09-08 Kramnik vs Leko, 2000 (replies)

HNP: What a beautiful game by Kramnik. The power exerted by the d-pawn, although Black could take it at once if he ever had a moment to do so, is impressive. It's the key to the whole attack.

   Feb-07-08 Boris Spassky (replies)

HNP: "Having done more practically at community and personal level to help combat facism [sic] and racism, at a pretty good guess" Oh sorry, I didn't realize I was talking to a Nobel Prize winner.

Feb-07-08 Morphy vs Anderssen, 1858 (replies)

HNP: "An easy trap to see, maybe Anderssen was awed so much by Morphy, that he was attacked by panic or chess blindness." Hardly. This was the third game of the match and Anderssen led 1.5 - 0.5.

Feb-05-08 Steinitz vs Chigorin, 1889 (replies)

HNP: Interesting. Black seems to be already lost after 8...Nc6?

Feb-04-08 Steinitz vs Maurian, 1883 (replies)

HNP: Thank you very much, that was most interesting.
