Joules is a nod to the energy needed to improve my game and a tribute to Jules Arnous de Riviere, a "friend" of Morphy and early opponent in Paris at the Cafe de Regence.

Now in my sixties, my grandchildren are the reasons I began exploring chess again after many years away from the game. While I've had no luck in promoting interest in chess with my grandchildren, I've most enjoyed revisiting chess and chess history. As a player, I am but a patzer, despite long hours exploring games at Chessgames and elsewhere.

Oct-31-15 Svidler vs Karjakin, 2015 (replies)

Joules: Chess24 has provided an excellent "revealingly" detailed and in depth transcription of an interview in Russian with the two players. Looks like a really good analysis of this most interesting and exciting match, blunders and all. Part 1 covers the four classical games. Part 2 will ...

Oct-17-15 Tal vs Botvinnik, 1960 (replies)

Joules: This game is featured in 'Lisa: A Chess Novel' by GM Jesse Kraai. The quote <keypusher> mentions is in the novel. Along with notation from a few of these 1960 games in an appendix, in a central chapter of the book the two protagonists actively discuss and analyze this game. The

Joules: The turning point appears to be at 23. ... Nd7. Engines suggest Ng4 is the better alternative. Playing that out enables Black to sustain an attack on the White fortress winning the pawn at f2. 23. ... Ng4 24. Qf5 Bd7 25. Qd5 Be1 26. Bg5 Bxf2+ 27. Kh1 Qc7

Feb-20-15 Zurich Chess Challenge (2015) (replies)

Joules: You all are correct regarding the structure of the tournament was clear "from the beginning." I read it and understood it myself. My confusion and complaint is perhaps better directed at the commentators and, of course, the way in which the tie breaker situation was handled. I like ...

Feb-09-15 GRENKE Chess Classic (2015) (replies)

Joules: Great tournament and good commentary by Nigel Short and Jan Gustafson. I've watched almost every round of Tata Steel, Gibraltar and Grenke. Their commentary style and content was the best, IMO. Chess24 is a great resource for tournament chess, IMO. Chessdom is excellent, as well, but

Feb-02-15 Nakamura vs Topalov, 2015 (replies)

Joules: Very nice analysis <patzer2> Houdini found this nice combination: 33. Bxa6 Bxa6 34. Nc6 Qd6 35. Nxa5 exd5 36. c4 bxa5 37. Rxd5 ... yielding an exchange of R&P for B&N and a +0.92 evaluation of 1.40 compared to 33. Nc6 This was a very good game. Nakamura is looking good.
