I live in New York where I am a psychologist. I last played tournament chess in my early 20's - 40 years ago. My last rating was 1834. My joy in the game is now mostly in following master games, which I feel are works of art. My favorite: Korchnoi.

Mfrankpsyd: Some of Niemann’s recent games, eg against Warmerdam and Mishra, let alone Magnus, are of such incredibly high quality. So exemplary and beautiful. But how does that compute with someone whose blitz and rapid ratings are in the 2300-2400 range?

Mfrankpsyd: Could have been a late week puzzle if it had begun at move 30. Well done!

Mfrankpsyd: The actual conclusion of this game is quite lovely.

   Jun-24-20 S Krasnov vs J Murey, 1966 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: I’d forgotten that Murey (still alive!) was Korchnoi’s second in 1978 (see his bio). What a pity that Tal got hooked up seconding for Karpov. I remember feeling broken-hearted after Korchnoi lost that last game, a Pirc of all things, losing the match 6-5. The way his son and ...

Mfrankpsyd: In suggesting 12. Qf6 you’re forgetting that white hasn’t yet played f5 to clear the way for the Bishop.

   Apr-10-20 S P Sethuraman vs J Zhou, 2017 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: Straightforward problem. Black’s queen has no place to go so either 21. Nc4 or maybe start with Rd1. What I don’t get is why Black didn’t take the offered knight with 13... gxf3. What am I missing?

   Feb-03-20 G O'Toole vs R Haria, 2009 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: I like the observation that this would have been easier over the board. Looking for a ‘puzzle solution’, I went with 40. Rh8+, which I’m pretty sure wins in all variations but is unnecessarily complicated.

   Jan-24-20 Wojtaszek vs Z Pakleza, 2010 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: I too was thinking 51.Rf4. If 51... Rxf4+ Then simply Bxf4 attacks both the R on c1 and f8 (followed by g7). Didn’t look at 51... Ra1 but the Qd6 reply is a killer. The text plan starting with Ng5 is beautiful. But is there anything wrong with the simpler 51. Rf4?

Nov-28-18 Caruana vs Carlsen, 2018 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: Why not 24... Qf3?

   Jun-16-18 P Smirnov vs Chiburdanidze, 1997

Mfrankpsyd: Not passive. Overactive.
