I live in New York where I am a psychologist. I last played tournament chess in my early 20's - 40 years ago. My last rating was 1834. My joy in the game is now mostly in following master games, which I feel are works of art. My favorite: Korchnoi.

Feb-03-25 Salov vs Minasian, 1983 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: 31. Nxg6 is the most decisive of the various winning moves. No one has yet mentioned 31. Nb6 which, after 31 Bf6, 32. Re8 leaves White up an exchange and a pawn (much like 31. Nf7); better but not best is 31. d8 which, after 31 Rxd8 32. Nf7+ gives White two exchanges and a ...

   Feb-01-25 E Prandstetter vs J Lechtynsky, 1978

Mfrankpsyd: A masterpiece of desperate defense that, alas, ultimately falls short.

   Dec-09-24 J van Foreest vs M Dehn, 2013 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: Oops, that is 29. Rxa7 as played.

Sep-19-24 Euwe vs Reti, 1920 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: Two elite mathematicians producing a geometric work of art.

   Jul-06-24 C Ward vs R Britton, 1994 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: Wards 28. Nh4 (as opposed to the more intuitive but inaccurate Nf4) is a lovely end to the combination.

May-25-24 Kasparov vs Yurtaev, 1975 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: Worth noting: Kasparov was 12 years old when this game was played and Yurtaev was 16. Yes, both were juniors but four years at that stage of life is huge. Yurtaev was nearly an adult, while Kasparov was still a child. This is not Yurtaev beating the world champion.

   May-15-24 Jack Peters

Mfrankpsyd: I remember playing in the World Open at NYC’s McAlpin Hotel sometime in the early ‘70’s. At the end of a round Jack Peters was playing a marathon endgame with Robert Byrne. I’m pretty sure it went over 100 moves. Byrne was trying to press a slight advantage and Peters was

   Apr-25-24 V Golod vs S Milliet, 2007 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: I looked at Qg4 but decided it was too plodding for a tactics problem. I looked at 26. Ng6. The e6 pawn cant be touched because of whites Qxb8, and the threat is Nxe7+. But white doesnt seem to have a reply to 26 Bf6.

   Mar-09-24 Brian Patrick Reilly

Mfrankpsyd: At least in this photo, Reilly bears a resemblance to Abraham Lincoln, who had a striking and unusual face. I don’t know if Lincoln played chess, but as commander in chief he conducted a courageous and steadfast endgame.

   Mar-03-24 Zvjaginsev vs A Donchenko, 2015 (replies)

Mfrankpsyd: Not so fast, King Arthur. I also followed up with Qxc7. But check out Whites actual (blitz) reply , which mates in two.
