Nasruddin Hodja
Member since Jun-02-06
I'm an enthusiastic amateur, to use Kasparov's disdainful phrase. However, I have deliberately avoided the use of computers in my play (I don't have chess software) in order to avoid feeding my chess addiction (I had to permanently swear off FICS in order to finish my dissertation). So my ability to help in team games is therefore limited--please cast a skeptical eye to any kibitzing that I make.

My username, btw, is in memory of the mythical Mullah Nasruddin, the wise fool (or foolish wise man) of Sufi parables.

Oct-08-09 R Filguth vs A De La Garza Madero, 1980 (replies)
Nasruddin Hodja: Somebody in must have read my brainwaves. I solved this one yesterday only after bashing my head against for days, looking at lines starting with 19. Qg2, 19. Qe3, and 19. Qf3. It was only after I looked at the line 19. Qg2 Qh5 20. Qh3 Be7, saving the queen, ...
Nov-19-07 Alekhine vs A Lopez Arce, 1939 (replies)
Nasruddin Hodja: This was the France vs. Cuba round of the Olympiad where Capablanca should have played for Cuba but chose to bow out in advance, possibly because he was afraid of Alekhine's effect on his blood pressure. Whether Alekhine knew about Capa's no-show in advance or whether he was
   Nov-17-07 B Lalic vs Khalifman, 1997 (replies)
Nasruddin Hodja: Silly <Whitehat>! If you read John Nunn's annotations to this game in _Understanding Chess Move by Move_ you'd learn much more from it than in Guess-the-Move. The more tactically complicated a game is, the more that ordinary mortals like you or me will blow out ...
Nov-06-07 Short vs Timman, 1991 (replies)
Nasruddin Hodja: Not that I want to criticize Short's play, but guys, we should be aware that using the king as an offensive piece is a very well-known tactic, especially in games where the opponent's position is tied up. Take the two following classics: Tarrasch vs Reti, 1922 and ...
   Nov-04-07 Paul Saladin Leonhardt (replies)
Nasruddin Hodja: <whiteshark>: "Leonhardt died of a heart attack while playing a game of chess. Lucky beggar!" Now now, there's only one cool way to die, and that is in flagrante a la Nelson Rockefeller. Among chess masters, only Leonid Stein is rumored to have crossed over this way. ...
   Oct-27-07 Petrov Defense (C42) (replies)
Nasruddin Hodja: <onqyj>: It is usually as much white as black who chickens out when playing the Petrov. There are the Kaufmann, Cochrane, and other offbeat lines, but here are the lines I would suggest if the player with white really wants a double-edged, tactical fight: (1) The ...
   Oct-27-07 Cunat vs Casanova, 1933
Nasruddin Hodja: <Steppenwolf>: Chill, dude. This database contains a 6-move loss by Anand as well as zero-move chess games from the Fischer-Spassky and Topalov-Kramnik matches. It doesn't seem fair that an otherwise worthless game in the database is "redeemed" by the name of the ...
   Oct-23-07 Steinitz vs R Gray, 1872 (replies)
Nasruddin Hodja: <playground player>: in his youthful days, up until the late 1870's, Steinitz was a Romantic player who relished playing the Evans and who was nicknamed "The Austrian Morphy". It was only when he suffered a concussion after being thrown out of a window by Blackburne in
