I live in Southern California. I am rated around 1300 USCF. I am very interested in the lore of chess -- chess stories and annecdotes. Please feel free to e-mail me nulf_william(at)

Nulfinator: I just watched a video made by Geoff Chandler. His explanation of how 1. e4 provides a flight square for the King was most enlightening!
May-04-10 Gavrikov vs Gelfand, 1995 (replies)
Nulfinator: I looked at 31. ... Ne1 for a long time ... then I saw 31. ... Rc3 and decided it was sharper. I didn't see 32. ... e5 at all, but doesn't it work as well with the Rook move? So I lost an easy one!
Dec-03-09 Kamsky vs Leko, 2008 (replies)
Nulfinator: "... Rooks go behind passed pawns ... " -- Aaron Nimzowitch. Someone had to say it.

Nulfinator: Yes ... Bobby Fischer is dead. As a teenager I idolized him, lately I have pitied him. Now I mourn the passing of the greatest chess player his time.
   Mar-09-07 Robert James Fischer (replies)
Nulfinator: I too am ashamed of what Bobby Fischer has said! His remarks about Jews strike me as insane. I want to point out that at one time Bobby was a hero! Back in the '70's he stood as an American fighting against the Communists. In a cold war he was one of our guys. Okay, so who cares,
Nov-28-06 Deep Fritz vs Kramnik, 2006 (replies)
Nulfinator: "It was a bad day for the Human kind." Sorry ... I have to disagree with the sentiment. As a chessplayer I am horrified by V. Kramnik's blunder, just like everyone else. This is not what being World Chess Champion is about. Having said that ... I am also a computer ...
   Jul-30-06 Adorjan vs M Basman, 1974 (replies)
Nulfinator: Isn't the 7.Ne2 an illegal move? 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.Nc3 a6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nxd4 Qc7 6.g3 Bb4 7.Ne2
   Oct-29-04 Balanel vs A Pytlakowski, 1951 (replies)
Nulfinator: I didn't get this one ... but the rook move is so innocuous, not a check, not a threat -- just a good supporting move. Serves me right for looking for the flashy move.
   Oct-27-04 K Bischoff vs K Mueller, 2004 (replies)
Nulfinator: There is a soft spot in my heart for smother mates ... so I got this one pretty fast. Loved it.
   Oct-12-04 Duras vs H Wolf, 1906 (replies)
Nulfinator: I wouldn't have used this for an illustrative win in the first place. More of "What's the best move". <donhart> Just a note to say thank you for running it through CM 9000. I would have played 22. Rxf7 (the text move). So I am giving myself 1/2 a Hershey Bar (partial ...
