Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

   Nov-30-21 F S Anderson vs E Michelsen, 1945
Phony Benoni: After <19.fxe5>: [DIAGRAM] A pretty sad position. The players have reached the point where they could toss all their legal moves into a hat, draw them at random, and White would probably still win in a few moves. Indeed, Black could get by with a baseball cap. I know of ...
   Nov-28-21 Najdorf vs P Michel, 1945
Phony Benoni: White may have been happy to get the bishop pair at move 19, but afterward Blac'ks play seems inspired by Emile Coue: <'Every day in every way, my position is getting better and better.">

Phony Benoni: <Stonehenge> There is a problem with this one. <Joseph F Callaway, Illinois> appears in the tournament crosstable published in Chess Life & Review (November 1971, p. 615). Spence's tournament book contains a photocopy of this. Howver, the Annual Rating List covering

Nov-08-21 Fischer vs Mednis, 1962 (replies)
Phony Benoni: After the success of "How to Beat Bobby Fischer", Medinis came out with a similar boo called "How to Beat the Russians." His concusion was: <"The best way to beat the Russians is to play better."> Can't say he was wrong, but it still felt like a wasted $11.95.
   Nov-06-21 Tolush vs Botvinnik, 1943
Phony Benoni: This tournament took place from Dec. 15, 1943 through Jan. 12, 1944. <Chess Review>, October 1944, p. 9, gives the game's date as "January 1944", citing a wireless press report by Nikolai Grekov. Is there some more definite information, one way or the other?

Phony Benoni: Today's GOTD, Rybka vs Shredder, 2007 , is identical to that of November 2, just as the GOTD for November 3 ( Kasparov vs Korchnoi, 1983 ) repeated that of November 1.

  saffuna: Before looking: Tom Dempsey?

When the ball hit the crossbar, the Detroit fans started cheering initially.

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Dempsey's 63-yarder smashed the previous record, which was only 56 yards. I can still remember yelling at the TV: "Look out for the fake! It has to be a fake!"

saffuna: <A couple nights later Alex Karras, the Lions’ star defensive lineman and four years “Mongo” in the movie “Blazing Saddles,” was on The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson asked him why the Lions didn’t appear to rush the kick very hard. Replied Karras, “We were too busy laughing at the very idea of a 63-yard field goal.”>

Karras also said, "I broke through, I was laughing, and then there was this sound, this sound like has never been heard on a football field..."

I'm surprised the record has only increased by three yards in fifty years. I think Dempsey's kick was like Beamon's jump, a huge leap forward (seven yards) that takes time to catch up to.

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Just looked it up. After the Dempsey game, the Lions won 5 of their last 6 gaes to make the play-offs as a the wild card. (ony one in those days).

They weren't that bad a team. Beat the Packers 40-0 at Lambeau.

MissScarlett: Any idea who this <Mahan> might be? Mahan vs J Whitehead, 1976
Premium Chessgames Member
Stonehenge: can be consulted for Californian chess history. has a Linda Mahan of Santa Monica.

In 1956 we have a Leonard Mahan:

Premium Chessgames Member
MissScarlett: Maybe <L Mahan> would suffice.
Premium Chessgames Member
Stonehenge: I didn't have much luck with Chess Life either. has a huge list of players. The only Mahan from CA is Linda.

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: The USCF Yerbook 1978, p. 35, has a partial crosstable from the 1976 American Open. Jay Whitehead's first round opponent was <Linda Mahan>.

Sorry, but I don't know how to do a link. If you have the thumb drive from USCF with copies of <Chess Review> and <Chess Life>, the 1978 Yearbook is at the end of the 1977 volume of <Chess Life & Review>. (In those days, yearbooks for a particular year were published at the end of the previous calendar year. At least they had them!)

Premium Chessgames Member
  Stonehenge: Thanks: Linda Mahan
Oct-06-21  HartmannGBamberg: Hello, Phony Benoni,

in your US-open 1976, Fairfax collection, you wrote about 300 additional available games. Could you please send them to me.
Thanks in advance.

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <HartmannGBamberg> I'm going to ask for a little time on this.

I transcribed most of these games from the daily bulletin, which often did not include full player names. For instance, Pal Benko's first round opponent is given simply as "Cohen".

I am hesitant to send out these games without fuller information, since it will be very difficult to update them later.

Fortunately, I have just found a partial crosstable fron the event, which should help in answering most of the questions. It will take some time, but now that I have a specific request I'm willing to drop my other projects for a bit and work on this.

If you will leave your e-mail address in a message here, I'll send you a PGN file when I'm finished. I will delete the message so your e-mail does not display on the site permanently.

  floryncd1970: Hello!

I would like to clarify one point.
In Atlanta collection, the last round game is given as Gheorghiu-Fedorowicz, which means Gheorghiu had white and "Fed" black. Could you tell me precisely which is the source of such identification of colors?! Or maybe even you have this game!?

Thanks, Florin

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <floryncd1970> The tournament bulletin definitely has Gheorghiu as White, Fedorowicz as Black.

This can be checked bylooking at their colors for the previous three rounds:

Round 9: Black
Round 10: White
Round 11 Black
Round 12 would normally be White

Round 9: White
Round 10: Black
Round 11: White
Round 12 would normally be Black

I thought I had sent you all the games of Gheorghiu I had from Atlanta 1980 (11 out of 12). Just in case, I'm sending you a PGN file with them.

Teyss: Hi PB, Just wanted to react to your post yesterday, figured your page was more appropriate than a game.

First, many thanks for everything you are doing for CG: game collections, posts and apparently many other things, I'm still discovering this site. Not very clear yet who does what.

<We are chess payers.> Of course but users also need to enjoy being here, else they will leave for other sites. GOTDs and puns are part of the fun as well as knowledge: GOTDs for sure, it's the site's main feature with POTD, puns sometimes because they can trigger interesting debates on chess or non-chess related items (we sometimes need a break).

<This may not be the best system> By far! What I sincerely regret is the complete opacity on GOTD and pun selection.
I understood yesterday MissScarlett is alone doing this and doesn't take into account the voting booth (I'll disregard the fact he/she didn't know about pun submission page even though his/her selection impacts this). Not blaming him/her, it's just too much for one person, aggravated by the fact it's under-processed.

<... but I think we can all agree that we can't all agree on what is.> Well we haven't really tried, have we? Users have regularly been complaining about quality. Agreed recently it has improved, but for how long?
Probably CG admins need to think for a while how to improve. Ideally the process should be:

1. Transparent: clear rules on who does what, when, how GOTD+puns are selected/on hold/deleted/other status.

2. Staffed: many users would agree to participate to the selection and help poor MS in his/her dantesque task (7000 entries, wow). There could be a a small reward, e.g. a label for the user doing this or reduced/free membership given a level of commitment. The voting booth could be an element but at least it needs to be advertised and used.

3. Structured. Instead of going through the 7000 entries randomly (it that the case? see transparency above), there could be a first automated filter based on e.g. not a previous GOTD, no/little/old kibitz, famous players or tournaments, etc. Then an automated filter based on voting booth. Then at least two "super-users" could select.

Sorry for this long post, just trying to help even though I don't know if you have any influence on the powers that be. Thanks for reading it.
Take care.

MissScarlett: R Ervin vs Saidy, 1970 I've uploaded this game with Roy Ervin as White, although in the tournament report in <Chess Life> of March 1971, pp.121-22, it appears as <A Ervin>. Can you have a look to see if there was a player of this name about that time?

The <LA Times> of November 28 refers to a Saidy victory over Roy although it talks of a 'narrow escape' for Saidy, which I'm not sure fits the game in question.

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> I can find nothing definitive such as a crosstable, but there are some good inferences pointing to Roy Ervin.

The USCF rating suplement pulishd in the June 1971 Chess Life included results from the 1970 American Open, so anyone who played there would be listed. There are in fact three Ervins: Gary, Roy and Walter.

Now, the LAT report gives some other pairings from the third round. Thee include Robert Byrne against "K Nelson" (Keith Nelson, AZ, rated 2016) and James Taran losing to Bill JOnes (2033).

This would indicate that Saidy's opponent was probably over 2000 as well. That could only be Roy Ervin, as the other two Ervins were below 1500.

Looking through other rating supplements of the time, I do not see an "A Ervin" anywhere. So that appears to have been a mistake, perhaps influenced by the opponent being "A Saidy".

As for the "narrow escape" comment ... well, Erivin did threaten mate on the move at one point, so maybe that qualifies. But Kashdan was impressed enough by the game to award it a special prize (CL, p. 122.)

Premium Chessgames Member
MissScarlett: I'm satisfied. If round three, then the date will be November 27th.

MissScarlett: Just for you: Browne vs Kavalek, 1971
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Thanks. I have an additional 350-375 games from the tournament to submit, and don't ask me how many more from my other projects. I got out of the habit when we had that glut a few years ago, but now that things are flowing again I need to get back to work.
Premium Chessgames Member
Stonehenge: I've uploaded a bunch of games 72nd US Open (1971).

Is Joseph F Callaway the same player as Joseph Callaway (Joseph E)?

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <Stonehenge> There is a problem with this one.

<Joseph F Callaway, Illinois> appears in the tournament crosstable published in Chess Life & Review (November 1971, p. 615). Spence's tournament book contains a photocopy of this.

Howver, the Annual Rating List covering the 1971 US Open (CL&R, January 1972, p. 42) gives <Joseph E Callaway, IL>. Other contemporaneous rating lists agree with this. I have yet to find another instance of "Joseph F Callaway."

Joseph Callaway appears to have ben primarily a correspondence player. In CL$R postal reports and lists, his name is given as <J E Callaway> and his state is never mentioned.

USCF's Member Services Area (SA) is not very useful for players before 1992, but it does list <Joseph E Callaway> from Illinois.

All this seems to indicate that "Joseph F Callaway" is a typo in the crosstable, and that the player is <Joseph E Callaway>. Two players from the same state at the same time with virtually the same name would be very unusual.

Premium Chessgames Member
Stonehenge: Thanks, I figured as much. I will merge the player files.
