Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> Thank you. Updates and corrections have been made. Iwhat happened with Lasker vs G A Fehmers, 1933 was that the version in ACB had a couple of extra moves at the end. Normally, I check each game by comparing the final position with a copy of the <CG> ...
   Nov-27-20 C L Bagby vs Koltanowski, 1939
Phony Benoni: After <17...Bf8>: [DIAGRAM] White could grab a pawn by 18.Bxd6 Bxd6 19.Qxb7. This is proverbally a bad idea, but it's not like WHite is lagging in developemnt and he might be able to get away with it. <Chess Review> (December 1939, p. 28) avoids the whole issue by ...

Phony Benoni: Plant a knight on c6, and you can go to sleep. Your game is lost.
   Nov-25-20 I Pleci vs L Endzelins, 1939
Phony Benoni: Well, I didn't mean it to be that complicated, but to simply to refer to how White conducted the attack not with his queen, but with his "bits and pieces". But the games seems to have been enjoyed, and that's the important thing: Showcasing the cleverness of the players, not ...
   Nov-24-20 Trompowsky vs Keres, 1939
Phony Benoni: After <33.Kxf4>: [DIAGRAM] A little staircase action here. <33...Qc7+ 34.Ke4 (if the king ever goes to e3, then ...Rb3+ is fatal) <34...Qc6+> and White resigns in view of 35.Kf4 Qd6+ 36.Ke4 Ng5+! .

   Nov-23-20 E Rojahn vs Capablanca, 1939
Phony Benoni: Just to confirm <Tabanus>'s suggestion, Cuba entered this match four points ahead of Norway in the race for fourth place and the final slot in the Championship section. A single draw would be sufficient to qualifyl but they barely got it losing the atch 3-1. Theere was a ...
   Nov-22-20 Vladimir Petrov vs R Grau, 1939
Phony Benoni: As long as black's knight can be posted on d7, White's queenside sacrifice may not work Black's queen can always go to b8 and be protected. So White's queen shifts to the kingside. Blac winds up playing 30...Ng8 to defends over there, whereupon 32.g5 denies it access to f6 and ...
   Nov-21-20 Seidman vs G Hellman, 1939
Phony Benoni: <Chess Review> (September 1939, p. 1180)quotes a proverb here, supposedly from Steinitz: <"Stall, stall, and stall some more. Your opponent will be sure to come up with an idea. It wil be sure to be rotten, and you will win."> But I agree with our friend from the ...

Phony Benoni: Lasker's score in the simul: +10 =10 -0. -- <Brooklyn Eagle>, July 13, 1939, p. 19. I doubt that Lasker was prone to daydreaming, but after <7.Bd3> I wonder if his mind went back to Lasker vs J Bauer, 1889 , played a half-century earlier. Black doesn't play well ...

Phony Benoni: <fq> Wow -- it's been over a decade sine I worked on the USSR Championships. If RusBase has been adding new games, we do need to go back and check the tournaments which are missing games.

In this case, there are only three new games (66 in all), as RusBase repeats the game N Grigoriev vs V Sozin, 1924. Besides your find of Levenfish - Vilner, the other new games are:

I submitted all three new games now.

From USSR Championship (1923) rusbase has one new game:

Not a stub! Black is busted.

You have 29 games from this event, and rusbase currently shows 30.

On USSR Championship (1925) you have 51 games and rusbase currently shows 54 of 183.

At least one of those is *really* a new game:

Event "USSR Championship"

I copied this score from Tkachenko's Vilner biography, so I'm not sure if this one counts as one of the three new rusbase games.

I have not yet submitted either of these new games.

As you may have guessed I am working on this at the moment: Game Collection: Yakov Vilner games

jith1207: Hi <Phony Benoni>, speaking of your avatar in another page recently, I have to admit that I use this same avatar of yours for my account in a Minnesota Vikings forum, to portray effectively how Kirk Cousins looks like when he has to play a tough game or need to complete a pass to avoid yet another quick walk back to the bench in an important game or with the season on the line.

I wanted to say this, but realized you're also from Michigan, like Kirk Cousins! What if you know him, or you supported him in Michigan State Football or his relative or God Forbid, his father!! Who knows, he may have acquired his nerd characteristics from a Cataloger, sounds fitting.

Anyway, if you know him, please ask him not to turn into a BEAKER on the football field. Now if you're a Lions fan, you can bet and relax that soon we will be losing to Detroit as well.

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <jith1207> You needn't worry. I'm a graduate of the University of Michigan. Enough said.

I will root for Kirk Cousins, as a Michigander, as long as the game doesn't affect the Lions' chances. Which means I generally root for him.

As for my opinion of him as a player, I will only say that, as a Lions fan, I was quite happy when the Vikings acquired him.

jith1207: Ha ha, nice to know. I hope Stafford gets healthy and wins one season before his time ends there, he has gone through a lot recently. But patricia is scary, in a bad way for their own.

  MissScarlett: James E Warren

Any idea if this Warren hailed from Boylston or, failing that, Boston or, at least, Massachusetts?

Found a game between James Warren of the Boylston CC and Claude Shannon of MIT.

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: James E Warren (1933-2014) was associated with chess in Illinois from the mid-1950s until his death.

An obituary at makes no mention of his earlier life or education. However, he evidently had a background in computer work, so it's not impossible he attended college in Massachusetts during the 1950s and had a chance to play Shannon then. However, that is just an observation; I have no idea if it is actually true.

Warren's professional career began in Illinois in 1959, so it would seem unlikely he would have been at Boylston CC after that.

Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> Was you source Lynn Burgess's column in the <Boston Globe>, May 26, 1957? The opening variation (Black side of the Sicilian Dragon) is one that James E Warren played at the time.

Warren shows up in this column several times from late 1956 through 1957 (generally playing on a high board for Boylston), but not before or afterwards. There is no mention of him being a student or from Illinois.

USCF annual rating lists fro 1956-1959 have James E Warren as an Expert from Illinois, but no similar name from Massachusetts.

Still not sure if they can be identified, but there is a little evidence for a fit.

Premium Chessgames Member
perfidious: I beat Jim Warren in one of the middle rounds of the 1988 US Open at Boston and then as before, he was listed as being an Expert-level player from Illinois.

Yes. I've just submitted the game. Agreed that the case for <James E> is less than compelling, but I think it more likely than not, so I've gone with him anyway. The 'anyway' being that we're more interested in getting his opponent into the DB.

Chessical: Would you be able to nominate your collection Game Collection: Fine - Steiner, 1947? It seems fully referenced and only has a few typos to correct. If you are too busy, but are agreeable, I can clone the collection and clearly show that you are the originator and author of this collection.

Phony Benoni: <Chessical> You asked for it, you got it!

I do not guarantee the prof reading. Even after griding away at it for eight hours, I have the feling <OCF> will find it a two-erase job.

MissScarlett: A heads-up on James Mortimer (kibitz #35).

Phony Benoni: Glad you were able to find it. I'm always reticent about submitting games from sources that lack basic game data.

MissScarlett: Game Collection: American Chess Bulletin 1933 includes the game <Lasker - Fehmers> as being one of those not in the <> DB, but's that's incorrect:

Lasker vs Fehmers, 1933

Are you sure the game location is Rotterdam? The other simul game you have from the same day mentions Utrecht which tallies with the link above.

Stonehenge: Definitely played in Utrecht, I've checked a few Dutch newspapers.

MissScarlett: I've submitted the Lasker - van de Bosch game from the same occasion; I'd already noticed the date was the 24th, not the 16th.

Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> Thank you. Updates and corrections have been made.

Iwhat happened with Lasker vs G A Fehmers, 1933 was that the version in ACB had a couple of extra moves at the end. Normally, I check each game by comparing the final position with a copy of the <CG> database which I download periodically. Since the final positions didn't match, I tagged it as 'nnot in <CG>."

This is a typically lazy way to operate, but more thorough ways are also more time intensive. Believe me, I spend enormous amounts of ime verifying or correcting information already.

By the way, the game also appeared in <Cess Review> for 1934. That version was identical to the <CB> version, and the game was added to the proper collection.

If I ever get around to submitting the games -- and there are about 2500 at present -- I will check more thoroughly before sending a game in.

By the way, "Rotterdam" was based on an unwarranted assumption of mine, so I'm glad you got that right. And I'll accept your date for the Van den Bosch game. Mine was based on a note by a collaborator of information in Whyld's collection of Lasker]s game.

Stonehenge: Planning was the 17th, but it became the 24th, see Lasker vs G A Fehmers, 1933 (kibitz #5)
