   Dec-10-05 A Bannik vs Tal, 1955 (replies)

Vavilov: <Neurotic Patzer> The Monday puzzle is the first (easiest) puzzle, and they get harder through Sunday.

Nov-08-05 A Medina Garcia vs Larsen, 1972 (replies)

Vavilov: What happens if 22 ... ♗xf4?

Oct-09-05 Topalov vs Morozevich, 2005 (replies)

Vavilov: <bigbear> "il n'y a que deux langues de travail à l'ONU: l'anglais et le français" Vous en etes sur? Je croyais bien que le chinois, le russe et l'arabe y etaient langues de travail aussi.

   Sep-20-05 K Popova vs Kasinova, 1974 (replies)

Vavilov: On behalf of all of us who don't resign when we probably should, sorry, <jahhaj>, <cuendillar>, and <centercounter>! I don't mean to annoy my opponents, but it's the only way to learn endgame play from better players. I often draw won endgames and lose drawn ...

   Sep-19-05 K Kiik vs O Salmensuu, 2000

Vavilov: What is the plan behind 32. Rb8+ ? In the game, all white manages to do is sacrifice a rook in order to win an exchange. Plus the move gives black's minor pieces a chance to protect each other. Did white expect something more from this?

Sep-13-05 Timman vs Polugaevsky, 1973 (replies)

Vavilov: Thank you, <patzer2>, for explaining the follow-up move 16. Nc3! This puzzle was so far beyond me that I couldn't see that move even after I knew the 15th move.

   Sep-08-05 R Leitao vs A Baburin, 1998 (replies)

Vavilov: What if 21 ... Qxd2 22 Bxc5+ Kd8 23 Rxd2+ Ned7 ? <halcyonteam> is probably right that it's mate in 3, but I don't see it yet. Can someone explain?

Aug-23-05 Polgar vs Shirov, 1994 (replies)

Vavilov: Is there a reason Shirov doesn't capture the rook with 42 ... Qxc6?

Aug-11-05 Tal vs Lutikov, 1964 (replies)

Vavilov: A fun game to see - I especially liked the black pawn on f3 from moves 9 to 26. I'm not sure I understand the pun. Is it based on the Russian "slon" meaning "elephant" and "bishop (in chess)"?

   Aug-05-05 Ivkov vs Eliskases, 1958

Vavilov: 34. Qe7 is hardly the only winning move, but it's elegant and might make a good Monday or Tuesday puzzle.
