Jan-17-14 | | hms123: <AsosLight> Try including http:// before the www.chessgames.com address. |
|
Jan-17-14 | | molew01: <hms123> I have the same problem as Asos Light. I typed in the complete name Chessgames Home Page in the Java Control Panel, but even now the Chess Viewer does not appear anymore. Do you have another solution for me? |

 | | WannaBe: <molew01> I had to give my Win7 a reboot after installing the updates (the update software did not tell me to do so... Go figure) And after the reboot, I was able to see games using Java and CVD II. |
|
Jan-17-14 | | hms123: <WannaBe> I have found that a reboot has often been necessary in the past with other versions of Java. I just use pgn4web now and cut-and-paste into my Fritz GUI for any kind of analysis, It is a pain, but I am getting used to it. |

 | | Viewer Deluxe: <Alien Math>, <WannaBe>
Thanks for your good suggestions. Hopefully, we’ll be able to find a legit way to set this up. I haven’t seen one setting that works for everyone yet. Unfortunately, recent Java releases handle Applets differently and that makes the config close to impossible. Meanwhile I opted for the simplest and most reliable solution that <always works>. I downgraded Java – complete uninstall, cleanup and re-install of latest Java 6. Yes, by doing so I’m willing to miss the “latest and greatest”, including the security fixes. Frankly (and sadly), in many cases the “latest and greatest” actually introduced new security problems. Not to mention security breaches that forced a complete system re-design (e.g. Java Applets platform security). You can call me old-fashioned but if I’m not really making use of it, I don’t want the “latest and greatest” installed on my machine. And don’t forget to turn off automatic updates. |

Jan-18-14 | | molew01: <WannaBe>, <hms123>, <Viewer Deluxe>,
Thanks guys for all your suggestions.
I removed Java completely from my computer and installed it again.
Then I rebooted my Windows 7 program.
But to my disappointment the Viewer still does not appear.
Maybe the only way to get this Viewer back is to install the old Java 6.
But I also noticed with my anti-virus program that this program brings in a lot of malware and viruses.Maybe I have a better solution for all of you:
There is a free program called Chess Base Light. With this program you can also play the games of Chessgames.
If you have installed this program, the only thing you have to do is to click on PGN: Download when the game of Chessgames appears on your screen.
Then Chess Base Light will open automatically with the game you want to see, with a beautiful large chessboard.
I hope this information will be helpful to all of you.
Let this Java go to hell!
I hope that Chess Base Light is still available on the Internet. |

Jan-19-14 | | soldal: Try this, it worked for me even though (it could hardly be because) I'm still on WinXP: Find Configurate Java (I went Start/Programmes/Java/Configurate Java). Click the blue "See security tab" link. Change the security level from High to Medium. Click OK. After that I get a prompt to click Run every time I want to see a game in Viewer Deluxe (just like before the Java update, only that now it's one not two clicks). I guess (hope) it will work like that on other sites too. You should only need the exception list if you want the general security level to stay High while making exceptions for specific sites. At least that's how I read it. |
|
Jan-20-14 | | molew01: <soldal> Thanks for your suggestion, but it does not work for me.
It says that the viewer does not open up, because the publisher is unknown.
I already put the name of chessgames.com in the exception list, but that does not help either. But thanks anyway. |

 | | WannaBe: <molew01> I was unable to reproduce your problem, I changed my (security) setting from medium to high and then to very high, and I was still able to view the games. (If you Control Panel -> Java Control Panel -> Security, there is a check box "Enable Java content in the browser", I take it, that it is selected?) Perhaps, if you tell us what Operating System you are using, I can try to duplicate it. |
|
Jan-27-14 | | molew01: <WannaBe> I checked this once again.
The check box "Enable Java content in the browser", is selected.
I am using Windows 7, 64 bits.
It looks like it is a Windows security problem, concerning Active X applications.
When I want to open the Viewer, I am asked if I want to install this active X application. Then I get the message that Windows does not open it because the author of the program is unknown. |
|
Jan-27-14 | | hms123: <molew01> <WannaBe> Is it possible that the problem has to do with using the 64-bit Java with a 32-bit browser (even though the computer itself is 64-bit)? |
|
Jan-27-14
 | | WannaBe: <hms123> It is possible, if you are only using the 32 bit browser, make sure you have right JRE. |
|
Jan-27-14 | | hms123: <WannaBe> I am not having any problems with Java at the moment (other than having to click on it with each game page). I thought it might help <molew01> and that you would know more about it than I do, which is always the case for computers. |

Jan-27-14 | | YouRang: I find that some features of CVD don't work as well under Chrome as they do in IE. Specifically, right clicking on the board to copy the FEN to the clipboard doesn't work. Instead, it opens a weird little window (partially covering the moves list) that contains the FEN. |
|
Jan-27-14 | | hms123: <YouRang> I have had the same problem (in Chrome) for quite a while. I have my workaround but it is annoying. |
|
Jan-30-14 | | molew01: <hms123>,<WannaBe>. I am using a 32-bits browser and Java Update 51, 32-bits. Today I got a new message when I opened a game with Chessgames.
It says: "For compatibility reasons, your Chess Viewer was changed to "pgn4web".
But my setting for the preferred viewer is still the Chess Viewer Deluxe. So it has something to do with compatibility. |
|
Jan-30-14 | | molew01: <hms123>,<WannaBe>. I just made an astonishing discovery: The Chess Viewer Deluxe opens up when I use the Firefox browser. The only thing I still have to do is to approve to run the application. But the question remains: Why does Internet Explorer not open the Chess Player Deluxe anymore? Is it not compatible anymore with the latest version of Internet Explorer? |
|
Jan-30-14
 | | WannaBe: <molew01> It's one of your setting under Tools -> Internet Option, but I am not 100% sure which one. <Golden Executive> have made post on CG.com's forum, said he changed something on IE, and it started to work, but he did not say what was changed, perhaps the margin was too small for the proof. =)) Go and ask on his forum. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: I loved the Deluxe viewer, my enjoyment of going over games is almost zero now. (I almost always - now - have to pull the game up in ChessBase and review in there. Its a big hassle.) |

Jul-17-14 | | explore openings: Hello,
The Java version of the Viewer Deluxe II is out of date (Java 7 update 51). It should be Java 7 Update 65. While this shouldn't seem to be a big problem, it can get blocked by security settings. The way I found to fix this was to go to the Java Control Panel (Start Menu -> type Configure Java) -> Security Tab -> Edit Site List -> Add chessgames.com. However it keeps complaining to me that it is a security risk. If there is a way to keep the Chess Viewer Deluxe II continuously updated along with the corresponding Java update, it would be appreciated. Thanks. |
|
Jul-17-14 | | explore openings: I should clarify along with the last post, that despite my java and browser's complaints, making the above change to the site list DOES fix the problem and allows the Deluxe Viewer to run in my browser (Firefox). |

 | | Willber G: I was using Chess Viewer Deluxe II yesterday (and since it was released) but now I get the following error message: *** ERROR: CHESS VIEWER () IS NOT DEFINED ***
It's not a Java issue as MistyBeach and ChessTutor still work. |

Sep-01-17 | | PaperSlim: Chess Viewer Deluxe II is broken someone please fix. |

 | | DrNyet: You'll probably want to try the new Olga Viewer Olga Viewer chessforum . Per the Chessgames.com forum, the idea is "to present the best features of Chess Viewer Deluxe combined with the best features of pgn4web, combined with special Chessgames-related "hooks" to our Stockfish system." |
|
Nov-16-19 | | LivBlockade: My preferred PGN viewer, Chess Viewer Deluxe II stopped working (I use the IE browser, as that's the only one that seemed to work before). I updated Java but no luck. Any tips or alternates? I liked that viewer because I could move the pieces to explore variations. Thanks! |
