   Aug-20-07 French Championship (2007) (replies)

Wilson H. L.: Vachier-Lagrave is doing very well, good to see this youngster tying for 1st place! By the way there's two Fontaine vs Tkachiev, I suppose it's an error.

   Aug-02-07 Y Solodovnichenko vs R Ruck, 2007

Wilson H. L.: Interesting : "Solo" tries an attack with Bxh7+ but the sacrifice proves to be unsound after 18..Kxh7. He probably analysed : 18..Kh8 19. Qh5 Bf3 20. gxf3 g6 21. Qh6 Qxe5 22. Bxg6+ Kg8 23. Qh7#

   Jul-19-07 Israel Zilber (replies)

Wilson H. L.: <technical draw: Too bad about his mental state. He'll be about 73 years old now. Wonder if he's still alive?> I've read somewhere that poor Mr. Zilber ended in a mental asylum. That's bad news.

Wilson H. L.: <arunjangity: and 1.b3 as white! we should rename the queen's bishop the 'blatny bishop'> I think Vladimir Bagirov deserves it more.

Wilson H. L.: http://www.mjae.com/gedult.html A truly interesting page in french about Gedult. Enjoy!

Jul-06-07 Karpov vs Taimanov, 1977 (replies)

Wilson H. L.: First saw this position in Hartston's "Teach Yourself Chess" some months ago and remembered the solution. Can I say that I solved the puzzle?

   Jul-05-07 Grischuk vs J Geller, 2004 (replies)

Wilson H. L.: Interesting : the one problem with this puzzle is that black hardly has a good move, so finding an acceptable continuation was rather difficult. Solved it anyway.

   Jul-01-07 L Owen vs R L Mapes, 1984

Wilson H. L.: <PhonyBenoni : If the date is 1966, there are at least a couple of possibilities. One is L Owen, (full name Louis B. Owen), a strong postal player from Michigan during the 1960s--1980s. There is also Brian E. Owens, who won the Golden Knights championship in 1965.>You are

   Jul-01-07 John Owen (replies)

Wilson H. L.: Probably the strongest amateur player in London, since he was able to beat some of the strongest player of his time. His win against Anderssen is a good example : Owen vs Anderssen, 1862 Also, the game Owen vs. I R Nelson from 1986 was certainly played by another Owen.

Jun-28-07 Gelfand vs Ivanchuk, 1989 (replies)

Wilson H. L.: What would've happened if Ivanchuk kept the h-file closed with 23...h5 ?
