♔ ♔ ♔ ♔ ♔ BEST GAMES OF 2019 ♔ ♔ ♔ ♔ ♔

Welcome to the sixteenth annual Best Games contest where we vote on the top games of last year, and then our results will be recorded for posterity in a Game Collection. For the Best Games of 2019, please post your votes in the <bgitw> chessforum from now until the end of January 15, and then we'll announce the results starting January 16. You may list up to ten database games from 2019, with your #1 choice receiving ten points and your #10 choice receiving one point. If you only nominate one game, it gets all 10 points; three games get 10 points & 9 points & 8 points, and so on. Please list your votes in downward order with #1 first and not a reverse countdown. Also, please do not post any running updates of the voting until the end. Note each game must receive at least two nominations to make the Top Ten.

You may include a description of why you enjoyed that game if you like, or else just post your list. Don't feel any pressure to supply deep analysis, and don't feel compelled to justify your choices. Vote however you want.

OhioChessFan: Thanks <tps>. The top 2 dominated voting. I'd bet #3 would be a big surprise to those who check out the list.

OhioChessFan: Going through the Top 10. This really struck me, besides those I voted for:

Ding Liren vs Caruana, 2019

Beautiful game by Ding...constantly surprising me with the moves he made. I tend to be a player like "Patzer sees capture, patzer makes capture", but he passed on a bundle of them, and always correct for doing so.

Great year by Ding. <tps> tell me if there's a cutoff date you want to stop comments. I'm working my way through every link posted.

OhioChessFan: #3 by <Fairy Promotion>. This is spectacular. Playing a Queen down for a longggg time.

D Gukesh vs Y Kryvoruchko, 2019

OhioChessFan: Finished up playing through all the games. Ding and Carlsen had great years, obviously. It's interesting to me that the Ding games just awe you, while the Carlsen games seem like such easy wins you forget how good his opposition is as he just thrashes people.

Ding Liren vs Caruana, 2019 was my top game for 2019. White displayed impressive maneuvering in the QRRN situation, against someone very hard to beat.

Thanks to everyone who voted.

OhioChessFan: Met a 9YO today, he clearly understood opposition, after a game, I asked him if he knew how to mate with Rook and King. He didn't give a definite yes, so I set up a position and played it out. I noticed he always moved his King in opposition when I had to back my King up a rank. But he didn't know what to do when I'd shuffle my King back and forth. You know what I mean, something like this, White to move, after him chasing my Kc6/d6/c6/d6 and him replying Kc4/d4/c4/d4:

So I showed him one time how to lose a move with his Rook. He gave a quiet nod, and immediately had it figured out. I remember back to my early days of chess and having fits with winning that ending. I was impressed that it took him being shown one time to immediately have it part of his arsenal.

I don't think I ever "learned" this type ending. Something you just do visually. My first move (even though it isn't tablebase best) would be Rc5. Simply limit the king between c5/c8 and c5/h5. As the king moves you limit more. If it doesn't allow more limiting you bring your king in.

jith1207: The user has never kibitzed since 2004, but premium paid forum is used for the best game collections.

Sorry, I don't know the history, just found out this forum, appreciate whoever that manages this.

<jith1207> it is User: tpstar (Tony Palmer) who created and manages that forum.

tpstar: <jith1207> Back in the early days, members could only have eight Game Collections per handle. I used <tpstar> for White openings and created <bgitw> for Black openings. That feature has since been updated allowing hundreds of Game Collections for Premium members. This space hosts the annual Best Games contest, which starts on January 2.

My chessforum was a target for cyberstalking, so I shut it down.

<tpstar> I believe that at the present time Premium members have no limit on the number of their games collections.
