edwitten: About all these comparing players and rating inflation debate: 1) Of course players today are better than decades ago. I'm not surprised that number 40 plays better chess than Karpov in the 70s.
For the same reasons an average physics Phd today knows more than Isaac Newton did. ... |

Nov-25-08 Vladimir Akopian
|
edwitten: I think Akopian is one of the less talked about GM.
Won 3 junior wch, finalist in 1999 World ch., got a 2700 rating, and in both Armenian olympic gold medals he was I think the main hero of the team (sargissian got more points, but against weaker opponents).
And still I can't ... |

edwitten: The way Carlsen is playing the kramnik-Anand match is becoming pointless |

edwitten: chessya11 :))
yes, in fact there are player that suffer from this more than others.
When I became a little older it was very annoying for me to play a younger kid |

Mar-01-08 Vasyl Ivanchuk
|
edwitten: I think there are psychological reasons. When he outplays 2600 players he moves quickly and confidently, here he is afraid to make mistakes and thinks a lot even when he has won position. So he get super-time trouble and blunders away the win.
mm
I should propose Ivanchuk to be his |

Feb-07-08 Ruslan Ponomariov
|
edwitten: There is always a problem confronting chess prodigies from different years: getting better when you're still a teen is getting easier and easier.
Think about this: when Fischer became grandmaster at 15 it was something incredible, never seen before and he was competing with adult ... |

Feb-05-08 Bobby Fischer
|
edwitten: Larry Evans's article was great. It is me or seems like Fischer got more human after he knew he had to die? What he said to Evans, what's he's supposed to have told just before death...It's like all the anger he had toward the world had gone away. |

Oct-09-07 European Club Cup (2007)
|
edwitten: the only explanation is that ivanchuk had to force matters for team reasons, because his play was pretty absurd. |

Aug-01-07 Montreal International (2007)

edwitten: Ivanchuk won even the blitz event! |

Apr-08-07 Dmitry Jakovenko
|
edwitten: Carlsen is 16,Jakovenko almost 24,that's quite a difference.Carlsen gets invites because he is a child prodigy, not for is "absolute" strenght. In modern chess wher you are over 20 you are no longer considered young and have to earn your invites. |
