Started playing in mid 1970s at Crowthorne Chess Club and then Camberley CC (Anne Sunnucks). Played for Berkshire under Nigel Dennis. Played for Centymca in London League from 1978-1983 with Mike Wills as Captain and for UCL and ULU in same period. Played in various tournaments including British U-18 and U-21 Championships. Favourite players include Mikhail Tal and Bobby Fischer. Like to start playing again but motor sport taking all time. Obtain DPhil in Chemical Physics from University of Sussex in 1991. Work in City as e-Business consultant.

Since the above I returned to chess in 2004 and became Co-Editor of The British Chess Magazine in May 2011.

   Nov-10-19 Schlechter vs Duras, 1911
jeupham: 10...d5 appears to be the refutation if indeed there is one. Still an incredible game from Carl Schlechter.

   Jul-01-13 C Barry vs G Botterill, 1979 (replies)
jeupham: The player of the black pieces was George Steven Botterill. The game was played in April 1979 in the Dublin Invitational Tournament. John Upham, British Chess Magazine
   Jun-30-13 G Botterill vs D S C Goodman, 1978 (replies)
jeupham: I'm not convinced these the players given are genuine. MMB did not visit London / England in 1978. The position after 9. 00 is not in Megabase 2012. 9. a3 appears 8 times. I wonder who the real players are? John
   Jun-30-13 J J Carleton vs G Botterill, 1978 (replies)
jeupham: There is a problem: the player of the black pieces is actually George Steven Botterill and was played at the BCF Congress, Ayr, 1978. I was there. John Upham.
   Jun-30-13 G Botterill vs Psakhis, 1977 (replies)
jeupham: We (BCM) asked Lev about this game (via Facebook) and he was not involved. Nor, I suspect was Botvinnik.
   Jun-30-13 Speelman vs G Botterill, 1979
jeupham: The player of the black pieces was George Steven Botterill from the 1979 BCF Congress in Chester, England. I was there playing in the British U-21 championship.
   Jul-29-12 R Krogius vs A Ojanen, 1944 (replies)
jeupham: Game #11655 in the January 1955 issue of British Chess Magazine confirms the game score as given.
