"The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart." -- Camus, "The Myth of Sisyphus" (tr. Walter Kaufmann)

After a long hiatus, I'm finally able to devote more time to the game I've loved for as long as I can remember. I am grateful to be here.

I do my best every day to improve, as a person and as an inexpert chess-player. My struggles with chess inform me and inspire me in my struggles with life.

I especially admire Albin Planinc for his ingenuity and courage and Dr. Max Euwe for his lucidity and generosity of spirit.

I am happy to help my fellow members however I might do so; please feel free to seek my assistance. Thanks!

luftforlife: <Jim Bartle>: I believe Yaz was referring to batting practice as well as to games played. Wade Boggs loved the Monster, but he was able to hit to all parts of Fenway Park, and that offensive versatility stood him in good stead.

luftforlife: <Tab>: Thanks for the information from Dr. Privonitz. The explanations on the website for Schlaraffia Athenae Gottingenses (not sure why the umlaut is missing there) jibe precisely with Dr. Privonitz's understanding.

luftforlife: <Tab>: <"There was also a Joseph Pomerantz who died in the WWI in 1915."> I was thinking perhaps this might have been the player sometimes referred to as J. Pomerantz and sometimes referred to as I. Pomerantz (assuming arguendo they were one and the same man). What ...

luftforlife: <Switch>: Yes, I see what you mean: the notes were still separated by braces. I wasn't trying to be obtuse; I think of formatting in sentences and paragraphs, and now I see that each segment of text within braces constitutes a separate "note," regardless of how it is ...

luftforlife: <suenteus po 147>: Hello again! I hope you're enjoying your new apartment, and I hope that all is well with you. :) Regarding your thoughtful comment made in another forum: this passage from The Gospel According to St. Matthew has always given me pause: "Think not that I ...

luftforlife: <Switch> <Annie K.>: Thanks very much! I will only use the ChessgamesWhiteID and ChessgamesBlackID tags where there is risk of confusion; I won't routinely use them. The particular contemplated annotations to which I adverted would be new ones created by one of the ...
