I have had 2 major successes in tournament play: first, winning the Washington DC area high school championship; second, going undefeated while playing 4th board on the M.I.T. "B" team in the 1971 Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship, with 5 wins and 3 draws and a performance rating somewhere in the 2200s..

Outside of tournament play, my best result was winning 6 consecutive blitz (5 minute) games against a FIDE master at the local chess club one evening. (Apparently I had achieved just the right mix of alcohol and caffeine at "happy hour").

rbhgroup: Odd... got this right away.. seemed easy... but yesterday, I had no idea what the solution was...

rbhgroup: I also met Mark in the Washington D.C. area, around 1970 or so... he was a great chess talent, of course, but also a very enjoyable person to be around, and very approachable. The world needs more people like him. R.I.P.

rbhgroup: I found 34. Rxd6 to be followed by 35. Qd5+ fairly quickly, but could not see anything definitive for White after 34...Re5. After that, it was just a wild goose chase looking for a better idea...

rbhgroup: Looked at the old standby Nd5 for too long... then spotted b4... but after a couple of days without running water in the house, I could not get through all the variations... did spot R:f6 in response to Qc7 though.... so not a total fail.... shout out to all my brothers and sisters

rbhgroup: odd.. I seem to remember playing this exact game last night against Fritz.... of course, after days without power, and now water, I could be imagining things... shout out to all my Texas brothers and sisters!

rbhgroup: nice game... I spotted Qe6 (what else could it be?) but then out-smarted myself by opting for capturing on f7 with the bishop instead of the pawn... (although I did see g:f7 as a possibility)... so near, yet so far...

rbhgroup: perhaps, in a parallel universe somewhere, the game was played in New York, New York...
