My name is Stephen E. Jones. I live in Warwick, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. I won the City of Perth Open in 1964 and 1965, at the age of 18 and 19. My rating was then over 2000, but I gave up tournament chess soon after. In August 2012, after a break of 47 years, at the age of 65, I started playing club chess again at the Perth Chess Club. I have found my tactical vision returning and although my rating is ~1800, about 200 points less than it was, I am hopeful it will gradually climb to at least 1900.

   Dec-28-21 E Contedini vs Euwe, 1960
senojes: Andrew Soltis on pages 9-10:of his "The Art of Defense in Chess" (1980) gives this game as an example of defence by voluntary retreating to reorganise one's forces. Euwe may be the most underrated world champion. But he won the title from no less than Alekhine in 1935, 15 1/2 - 14 ...

   Feb-07-18 Y Neishtadt vs Kotov, 1956
senojes: I am coaching at my club using Kotov's excellent "Play Like a Grandmaster" and this game is on pages 84-85. Except that the book spells Neishtadt as Neyshtadt. Houdini rates Black's 25... Rb4 as weak [-0.18] compared to 25... d5 [-1.20] . The reason is that better than White's ...
   Jun-27-17 Botvinnik vs N Sorokin, 1931 (replies)
senojes: This game is in Kotov's "Play Like a Grandmaster" (1978), pages 44-46. I am using that book for coaching our Chess Club members. >At that time a game ends in a draw not when position repeated 3 times but when moves repeated 3 times. It is now that the *position* has to be about ...
Sep-21-15 Von Scheve vs Teichmann, 1907 (replies)
senojes: I am an ~1800 rated player who has been playing chess at the club level on and off since the 1960s. I have recently bought Chernev's "Logical Chess: Move By Move" (1998) and had decided to play through the games in the book on my smartphone's Chess for Android app when away from my ...
   Jul-07-14 Capablanca vs J Corzo, 1901
senojes: Corzo having 2 wins to Capablanca's 0, in this first to 4 wins match, Capablanca resolved to from now on open with 1. d4 instead 1. e4 with the aim of obtaining games that were more suited to his positional style and less suited to Corzo's tactical style. Corzo responds with 1...f5,
   Jul-07-14 J Corzo vs Capablanca, 1901
senojes: Up to 8...d5 this game followed W.F. Eno v S. Lloyd (the problem composer), New York, 1894, when Eno played 9. Bxf4 and won. So both players were presumably following current opening theory. Corzo's 9. exd5 may be his own improvement sprung on the 13 year-old Capablanca. If so, ...
   Jul-05-14 J Corzo vs Capablanca, 1901 (replies)
senojes: This game was played on Capablanca's 13th birthday! According to Houdini Capablanca was doing fine against his 28 year-old Cuban champion opponent Juan Corzo, as Black in the tricky Evans' Gambit, when the inexperienced Capablanca played the natural but bad 12... Nge7 which was ...
   Jul-01-14 Capablanca vs J Corzo, 1901
senojes: Cyrus Lakdawala in his book, "Capablanca: Move by Move" (2012) claims that his rating improved by nearly 50 points from studying Capablanca's games. So I (lowly rating 1766) have embarked on a project of analysing with the help of Houdini, every one of Capablanca's formal (i.e. ...
   Apr-25-14 E J Diemer vs Roller, 1952 (replies)
senojes: The position after Black's 19...Qxd6 was the chess column problem in my today's Friday (25 Apr 14) newspaper. In view of the comments above about the game being comparable to a Fischer or a Tal game, I played it through on Houdini 4, expecting a tactical masterpiece. But Houdini ...
