 | | playground player: <kwgurge> You hit the nail on the head there, too. It's so frustrating, to play very well for a time and then detour into the valley of blunders. I wish I could somehow play a game against myself at 18. One consolation: I can't lose! |

Apr-27-08 | | benjinathan: <kwgurge> what kind of lawyer are you? I do labour. |

May-02-08 | | benjinathan: <kwgurge> Thanks for the response, it was worth the wait :). I practiced mainly employer sidw with Baker & Mckenzie. Ten years ago I was appointed a vice chair of our provincial labour relations board where I remain. I am sort of a cross between an adjudiactor at the NLRB and an administrative law judge. I am also a private arbitrator and mediator. I try to avoid tax issues at all costs ;). |

 | | playground player: <kwgurge> I found this in Bruce Pandolfini's "Q & A" column at chesscafe.com; it speaks to a topic you and I have discussed. Q: I stopped playing chess about 25 years ago, and I'm going to be 70... Is it too late for me to start playing chess again with any proficiency? Can I get much better, considering my age?... A: It's never too late... Recent studies have shown that, for instance, when an older person learns a new language and is forced to find new ways to solve problems, he or she can perform as if much younger. In effect, their brains function with much greater vitality... [cites "The Brain That Changes Itself," by Norman Doidge]... To that end, I reason that studying and playing new opening lines and variations equates nicely with the concept of learning a new language. It will help you to think with a brand new perspective and enable you to perform with much greater strength... I wonder if he's right. I wonder if we can improve by changing the way we play--learning new openings, etc. Worth a try, don't you think? |

May-21-08 | | chesstoplay: Thanks for the congrats for Yury!
I'll tell him ASAP.
And thanks for the kindness to Pianoplayer... he's very young, but a nice kid with a big chess heart. |

May-23-08 | | chesstoplay: The quick welcome home party was last night.
The general Illinois chess community celebration party is June 8th, probably at a Barrington elementary school. It may even be an open house, of sorts, so you are invited as my guest if you care to make the Chicago run. I've scheduled Yury to get on chessgames.com and answer some posts, but that won't be until Tuesday after the Chicago Open is over. Check my post at Artar1's forum. Thanks! Take care. |

 | | kutztown46: <twinlark>, <kwgurge>, <YouRang>: We are trying to form a Summarizing Committee under the leadership of <whatthefat>. At this point, his only assistant is <TheDestruktor>. We would like to recruit at least two more. <whatthefat> has suggested that the three of you would be good choices if you are willing. I agree with his assessment. Will you consider it? |

Aug-31-08 | | klangenfarben: <kwgurge>: I can't find the GMAN quote where he talks about learning from his defeat at the hands of the World Team and that he was taking an entirely different tack in the current game. I think it would be of enormous benefit to the Team if the speculation were toned down, as it's ultimately noise in the channel, and re-iterating this quote might raise the level of discussion. Any help? Please reply in this forum, I'm still coming up to speed with the full chessgames.com ZeitGeist and am not ready to activate my own forum. |

Sep-04-08 | | Judah: <kwgurge>, I don't come here to attack you, of course; just to play (a minute role in) the game. Sometimes I'm roused to comment on something. I disagree with your opinion, obviously, and perhaps felt somewhat slighted by it. I bear you no personal animosity. There may be more to say, but public forums are probably not the best place for such a discussion. |

Dec-11-08 | | sentriclecub: Opening Explorer click for larger view< kwgurge: <sentriclub> In the line you give, 5.Nc3 is not a very good move for white. In most Ruy lines it is better to eventually play c3 (to support a possible d4 and to provide a square for the LSB to avoid being traded for a knight) as well as the sequence Re1/Nbd2/Nf1. Obviously, there are many different directions a Ruy can take, but 5.Nc3 is, IMO, not very good in any of them.I agree with that black may select the Marshall. We'll need to be ready for it. In the meantime, while we wait to see which line they choose, I think we should be looking at the most recent Anand games as he is about the best there is on the white side of the Ruy.> Thanks for your reply, but I botched the sequence.
From this board, what is white's plan?
Here, I interpret the main line to be...
...O-O and c3 leading to
click for larger viewIs white trying to bust open the center? or is black? Is black simply trying to get space and defence while he lets white have a superior coordination of pieces? I want to learn a lot of chess from this game, but if you could give me a 5 minute explanation of what the debates are going to include, I'll be a more educated listener. I understand that the one word strategy in the sicilian is <counterplay> but for the Ruy Lopez it looks like a game of checkers with no information jumping out of the page. I get the impression that I am just not seeing over the horizon, and that the Ruy is a sound opening and makes sense for people who can see the position deep enough, but I'm lucky to see 6 ply, even when I spend a couple hours studying the position. Thanks,
 |

 | | Sneaky: Hey kwgurge you were asking about an exchange sac in the semislav, when I tried to look it up I lost my way and couldn't find it, but I know the general variation. If you go to the Opening Explorer you can see the line 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e6 5. e3 Nbd7 6. Bd3 dxc4 7. Bxc4 b5 8. Bd3 a6 9. e4 c5 10. e5 cxd4 11. Nxb5 Nxe5 12. Nxe5 axb5 13. Qf3 click for larger viewThat move, 13.Qf3, was tried by J.R. Capablanca and sure looks strong. Black's rook is under attack and how to save it is not very clear. E.g. 13...Ra7 (or ...Rb8) 14.Nc6 forks the queen and rook. Of course 13...Ra6? Bxb5+ is awful. It looks like Black is losing material. But the semi-slav is blessed. The saving continuation seems to be 13. Qf3 Bb4+ 14. Ke2 Rb8 15. Nc6 Bb7! and material is preserved. Now that I look at it, that's not the "exchange sac" I had in mind. Black is not down the exchange when the smoke clears at all. If I find the sacrifice I had in mind I'll post it here for you, but I believe it's a different variation in this same can of worms. |

Mar-05-09 | | capafan: <kwgurge>I saw your post on <kutz> forum...thanks for understanding. I am glad your thick-skinned. Hopefully, all the inefficiency of this first try at following an opening theory will work itself out... I understand your position better now that you have explained it...how we handle transitioning from our original plan into an analyzed strategy is a sticky issue. Maybe we should state this from the start. Hopefully, the team will review the analysis rather than perfunctorily look at my forum or <RV>'s top line to make a decision. Even so, look at my suggestion about updating the baseline to <kutz> to see what you think... |
|
Apr-01-09 | | capafan: Once, again, thanks for your support for improving the process...your advocacy has been unerring despite our occasional differences. As I see it, this is a critical component in defining a strong teammate. I would welcome your addition to any team I would choose to join---chess or otherwise.:) |
