Ten years ago I was appointed a vice chair of our provincial labour relations board where I remain. I am sort of a cross between an adjudiactor at the NLRB and an administrative law judge. I am also a private arbitrator and mediator. I try to avoid tax issues at all costs ;). |

Q: I stopped playing chess about 25 years ago, and I'm going to be 70... Is it too late for me to start playing chess again with any proficiency? Can I get much better, considering my age?... A: It's never too late... Recent studies have shown that, for instance, when an older person learns a new language and is forced to find new ways to solve problems, he or she can perform as if much younger. In effect, their brains function with much greater vitality... [cites "The Brain That Changes Itself," by Norman Doidge]... To that end, I reason that studying and playing new opening lines and variations equates nicely with the concept of learning a new language. It will help you to think with a brand new perspective and enable you to perform with much greater strength... I wonder if he's right. I wonder if we can improve by changing the way we play--learning new openings, etc. Worth a try, don't you think? |

Obviously, there are many different directions a Ruy can take, but 5.Nc3 is, IMO, not very good in any of them.I agree with that black may select the Marshall. We'll need to be ready for it. I want to learn a lot of chess from this game, but if you could give me a 5 minute explanation of what the debates are going to include, I'll be a more educated listener. I understand that the one word strategy in the sicilian is <counterplay> but for the Ruy Lopez it looks like a game of checkers with no information jumping out of the page. I get the impression that I am just not seeing over the horizon, and that the Ruy is a sound opening and makes sense for people who can see the position deep enough, but I'm lucky to see 6 ply, even when I spend a couple hours studying the position. If you go to the Opening Explorer you can see the line 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e6 5. e3 Nbd7 6. Bd3 dxc4 7. Bxc4 b5 8. Bd3 a6 9. e4 c5 10. e5 cxd4 11. Nxb5 Nxe5 12. Nxe5 axb5 13. Qf3 
click for larger viewThat move, 13.Qf3, was tried by J.R. Capablanca and sure looks strong. Black's rook is under attack and how to save it is not very clear. E.g. 13...Ra7 (or ...Rb8) 14.Nc6 forks the queen and rook. Of course 13...Ra6? Bxb5+ is awful. It looks like Black is losing material. But the semi-slav is blessed. The saving continuation seems to be 13. Qf3 Bb4+ 14. Ke2 Rb8 15. Nc6 Bb7! and material is preserved. Now that I look at it, that's not the "exchange sac" I had in mind. Black is not down the exchange when the smoke clears at all. If I find the sacrifice I had in mind I'll post it here for you, but I believe it's a different variation in this same can of worms. |

Maybe we should state this from the start. Hopefully, the team will review the analysis rather than perfunctorily look at my forum or <RV>'s top line to make a decision. Even so, look at my suggestion about updating the baseline to <kutz> to see what you think... |
