Jun-18-04 FIDE World Championship Knockout Tournament (2004) (replies)

Suenteus Po: Some noticable talent is missing from the line up. Aside from Anand and Shirov, what other big names will not be participating?

Feb-18-04 Kramnik vs Anand, 1997 (replies)

Suenteus Po: <Whitehat1963> If Kramnik plays 30.Rd8+ then Anand simply plays 30...Ng8, blocking the check. After that, Kramnik must move his bishop to avoid capture and being mated himself, and that's too disabling at this point, being down a whole knight.

Feb-12-04 Van Wely vs J Torres, 1993 (replies)

Suenteus Po: Ouch. 35...Ka6 and 36.Nb4+ loses the game winning pawn for black. That's got to hurt.

   Jun-26-03 Adorjan vs J Tisdall, 1981 (replies)

Suenteus Po: If 23...Bxd1 then 24.Bd5 captures black's queen, leaving white up a knight in the endgame. If, on the other hand, black refuses to take the rook in order to stop the pin, he must move his own rook to prevent 24.Bxa8, losing a tempo to white and letting the previous 23.Nxb4 go ...

Mar-16-03 Capablanca vs Manhattan CC, 1931 (replies)

Suenteus Po: It sounds like this game should have been titled 'Who shot JR?' with so many people on the team, and so many teams to play against simultaneously.

   Mar-14-03 Alekhine vs J A J Drewitt, 1923 (replies)

Suenteus Po: It's not enough not to take the bishop. Black's whole position is doomed so long as the f-pawn stays where it is. Why not 22...f5 to remove the problem? It prevents the queen from taking g4, and it leaves an out for the king, or allows him to snag the bishop. If 23.Qh5 Kxg7 ...

   Mar-14-03 Pirc (B07) (replies)

Suenteus Po: hey, chessgames, the board layouts for Pirc, Pirc classical, and Pirc Austrian all mixed up. Just thought you'd like to know.
