I've only been playing chess for about two years now — and naturally I still flounder about the board like a true patzer. Lately I've been working on my mid-game tactics with some positive results and the end game somewhat less successfully. As for openings, my repertoire is pretty much limited to the Four Knights, Ruy Lopez and King's Indian Attack (KIA).

Although I learnt how to move the pieces as a child, it wasn't until my son (now eight) started playing competitively that I actually began to learn how to play. After a few drubbings at the board it became clear that I needed to hit the books if this was going to be an interesting activity for the both of us. Quite recently my four-year-old daughter has also taken an interest in the game and it will be interesting to see whether or not this newfound interest of hers persists.

My favourite players and authors include Ludek Pachman, Gideon Barcza, David Bronstein & Mikhail Tal. Among currently active players I like the games of Peter Leko, Judit Polgár, Michael Adams and Boris Gelfand.

nkvd: I wonder if the FIDE folk can pull a rabbit out of the hat and save this match? Unfortunately as it looks now the rabbit is going to have a fould smell no matter where things stand when it's over.

nkvd: Fritz 9 give a sliver of an advantage to White... but with Kramnik's bishop dominiting Topalov's Knight it's starting to feel a lot like a draw.

nkvd: <Caissanist> Although L. Polgar was a 'hobby player' there is his book: _Chess: 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games_ which is just that — a mammoth compendium of chess puzzles. <Susan Polgar> I read somewhere that your father was an Olympic athelete. What sport did he ...

nkvd: <DevinPFelter>: The '72 match did indeed bring a lot of new players to the table and raise the awareness of chess in the general public. You really have a strong point there. But a lot of that same enthusiasm eventually faded after Fischer failed oblige by defending his title -- ...

nkvd: An interesting article concerning Kasparov's political views + thoughts about FIDE and the world championship: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4... Chess doesn't usually make the BBC site's front page.

nkvd: I've had a couple of folks recommend that I read Pachman's 'Complete Chess Strategy.' Originally it was released as a multi-volume collection (three volumes?), and then was later condensed into a single volume offering. While the condensed version, 'Modern Chess Strategy,' is still ...

nkvd: <wkargel> The new book weighs in at 176pp and Dunnington bills it at, 'an expanded, revised edition of the original.' There are several games that date from after the first edition... you can look at my KIA game collection to see some of the games in the new book.
