Mar-31-16 | | TheFocus: Happy birthday, Andras Adorjan. |

Mar-30-17
 | | ketchuplover: I think he should move to Oklahoma :) |
|
Mar-30-17 | | Ironmanth: Happy birthday, Grandmaster! Saw you play, and win, in the '87 New York Open. Thanks for your passion for our wonderful game. |
|
Mar-30-17 | | henjutsu: <Yet even his personal statistics show him scoring better with White than Black. Using ChessBase, I compiled a "Dossier" on him. In 869 games as White, he scored 60%; in 911 games as Black, he scored 55%.> That could be related to self-fulfilling prophecy, with players giving up faster and not looking for winning moves as eagerly because they assume themselves to be worse as black from the start. If he plays equally well with both sides, we shouldn't expect him to have an equal ratio against other players and their trends. |

Jul-21-17 | | Marcelo Bruno: I know that the Musikhochschule Köln has a flute professor that has this name: does anyone know if it is the same person? |
|
Jul-31-17 | | diagonal: Andras Adorjan continues his mission: After "Black is OK!" (1988/89 Batsford), "Black is Still OK!" (2004, Batsford), and "Black is OK Forever!" (2005, Batsford), the recent (and final?) black hymn is arriving: <Black is Back!> (2016, New In Chess), his message remains just as emphatic, inspirational, and intimate: "Manisch im besten Sinne - ein sehr persönliches Vermächtnis Adorjans" (Frank Zeller, SCHACH, german monthly chess journal, no. 8/2017) https://www.newinchess.com/black-is...

Jul-31-17 | | Retireborn: Once you go Black, you never go back. |
|
Mar-31-18 | | ndg2: Nice spin on "Back in Black". Adorjan is an AC/DC fan? |

Feb-12-19
 | | louispaulsen88888888: Thanks FSR. Before compiling the statistics myself I looked through the comments to see if it was already done! |

 | | louispaulsen88888888: White has a statistical edge. You may argue this is due to a psychological element. So let’s examine players not affected by psychology. Alphazero lost 11 games to Stockfish. 10 losses as Black. One as White. |

 | | perfidious: RIP. Your books were entertaining and informative. <HMM: 73 is too early to go.> As a chess professional, perhaps not so much; it is a sedentary game. It is small wonder really that so many strong players have passed on, aged 64. Chess is only too similar to poker in this way. |
|
May-12-23
 | | MissScarlett: Your Adorjan memorial puns are solicited. |
|
May-12-23
 | | Williebob: Not a pun, but a memorial:
<Black is OK Forever>
<perfidious: It is small wonder really that so many strong players have passed on, aged 64...>
Let's all remember to leave the board occasionally and go for a nice walk. Break a little sweat every day and thank yourself! |

 | | FSR: I'm sorry to learn of GM Adorjan's death. I have all of his books, and discussed his theories in my award-winning Wikipedia article
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First... Portisch in a foreword to one of Adorjan's books added the caveat that Black is indeed OK!, but only if he plays the right openings. Consistent with this, as Black I usually play openings where statistics show that Black is OK!, such as the Sicilian and the Nimzo-Indian, both of which score around 48-49%. But I have toyed with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 Nxe4?!, which is tenable with best play but where White is playing for two results in his strongest line, namely 4.Qe2 Qe7 5.Qxe4 d6 6.d4 dxe5 7.dxe5! Nc6 8.Nc3! |

May-13-23
 | | HeMateMe: Or, you could party like Tal and die at age 55. He used to come to the Leningrad Club in Brooklyn, <little Odessa>, the Russian neighborhood here and swim in vodka. Tal went out with his boots on and deserved to do it his way. |

May-14-23
 | | Gottschalk: Sad news.
He was a great GM. |
|
May-14-23
 | | 0ZeR0: Rest in peace, GM Andras Adorjan... a very fine player and writer. |
|
May-14-23 | | ASchultz: RIP. I remember reading his name in lots of chess magazines, then seeing him on YouTube clips of The Master Game. As for Adorjan puns, I'm pretty sure it's AD-or-Yan, but "adorin'/adoring seems good. |
|
May-15-23 | | wordfunph: rest in paradise, GM Adorjan.
black will be forever ok. |
