COLONEL MOREAU
(born Sep-14-1837, died Jul-06-1916, 78 years old) France

[what is this?]

Believed to be Charles Paul Narcisse Moreau, a notable officer of the French army, a chevalier of the French Legion of Honor, and an internationally respected mathematician. He lost all 26 of his games at Monte Carlo (1903), to which he was invited as a last-minute replacement for Mikhail Chigorin.

Aug-11-09  Dredge Rivers: Any relation to Jeanne?
Aug-11-09  Dredge Rivers: He did it in the Library with a lead pipe!
Sep-07-09  Marcelo Brasileiro: How daring was Moreau to compete against the masters: if he only sponsored the event, certainly the final result would be more interesting.
Feb-10-10  Petrosianic: <Colonel Moreau was an amateur and he organized this tournament so they let him play.>

You'd think that along with the Brilliancy Prize and the Best Game Prize, he might have funded a "Worst Score Against Colonel Moreau" Prize.

But yes, Moreau is infamous in his way, and appears in several "lighter side of chess" style books. His story is the stuff legends are made of. Total unknown appears in GM Chess, gets wiped out, then disappears into history. We can almost imagine what he looked like. A British Colonel in 1903. Probaby had a pith helmet, handlebar mustache, glass of port in one hand, cigar in the other, and a veteran of the Crashing Boer War.

Feb-10-10  ath: There are some more interesting things about Moreau: he was also on some kind of tournament committee (Hoffer mentions him in The Field in October, 1902). Prof. Rice was on the committe, too, but most members seem to have been without any direct connections with chess. Hoffer was one of the vice-presidents, so his reports can probably be trusted.

One thing I find curious is that the in B.C.M. 1903 there's a tournament rule mentioned about not playing with full strength -- first offence was a reprimand, second a fine, and third and last a bar against entering future toruneys. A very military-minden man might possibly want to avoid a reprimand at any cost.

Feb-10-10  Petrosianic: Interesting. But no word on what his first name he was, or anything he did after Monte Carlo? I have a feeling it might be interesting to run his 26 games through Fritz and try to get an idea of just how good a player he was.
Feb-10-10  TheFocus: Uber-historian Edward Winter has found evidence that Moreau's first name may have been Charles after seeing it as Ch. Moreau.

From Chess Notes #4574:
<As regards his forename, page 47 of the February 1903 Wiener Schachzeitung (edited by Marco, a participant in the tournament) had ‘Ch. [i.e. Charles] Moreau’.>

More importantly, does anyone know what was the first name of Colonel Mustard in the game Clue?

Feb-11-10  TheFocus: <ath> Thank you for that link. I had not seen that before. That should certainly clear that up.
Feb-11-10  ath: (Rats. I deleted by previous Kibitz -- I was mistaken about his decoration.

I thought Jeremy Spinrad had covered the basics well enough already? See http://www.chesscafe.com/text/spinr... and also .../spinrad32.pdf.

In the spinrad32.pdf, there's a non-working weblink to page that confirms that Moreau was a Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur. The error is that of the web site -- it cites the wrong URL. But if you start at the root URL, and 'recherche' for 'legion d'honneur' you'll find the search function for the rolls of the order.

Sorry about that ...

Feb-11-10  ath: And rats again. I can't make correct links myself ...

The second in particular deals with the Moriau vs. Moreau question, and concludes that they are not the same person.

alexmagnus: Well, if this is really Charles Paul Narcisse Moreau, then at least he left some traces beyond his 0-26 score at Monte Carlo :)

FSR: Poor guy. You'd think he could have scraped a draw somewhere. I remember Marshall included one of their games in his collection of best games. He didn't mention that the Colonel had gotten skunked.
Jan-03-13  andrewjsacks: After this tournament, he might also have been Colonel Morose.

alexmagnus: I know how he felt when playing there... Two years ago I, a 1600-rated guy, was invited after an open tournament to play some bitz tournament. What I didn't know: I'm one of only three (of 22) participants rated below 2000... I went 1/21, with the only win being on time in a lost position against a fellow sub-2000 (in the 17th round - after that win I got congratulations as if I just beat them all :D). One IM or FM, when playing with me, kind of teased me - "well, I just attacked your bishop, so what do you do?". But despite the horrible score I feel, retrospectively, that tournament was quite fun for me to play.
Jan-03-13  andrewjsacks: I looked at several of his games. Colonel Moreau was obviously a capable player, but just out of his league here, and maybe in bad form, and no doubt distressed and strength-weakened after losing a number of games in a row to start... A pity for him he goes down in chess history like this. C'est la vie.

FSR: <alexmagnus> At least your tournament just took a few hours. Moreau got to play and lose almost every day for a month.
