EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951, 73 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines and is the strongest Filipino chess player of his generation. He reached a peak world ranking of 20 in January 1983 and was in the world's top 100 players for most of the period from 1975 until 1992. (1) At the age of 60, he remains ranked among the top players in the Philippines.

Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 when he won a bronze medal on board 1 at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for four decades, playing in every Olympiad since 1970 (except for 2008), playing top board for his team in every Olympiad between 1972 and 2004 inclusive, and leading the Philippine team to 7th place at the 1988 Thessaloniki Olympiad. Altogether, he has won three individual Olympiad bronze medals. Torre also participated in most of the early Asian Team Championships, invariably playing top board and invariably winning one or two medals. He lead the team to three consecutive gold medals during the games held in 1977, 1979 and 1981, to silver in 1983, and gold again in 1986. He also won 4 consecutive individual gold medals in those years and finished with a bronze medal for both the team and himself in his last stint at the Asian Team Championships, played in Kuala Lumpur in 1993.

He beat Anatoly Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was a friend of Robert James Fischer, playing some training games with him and acting as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Later he conducted radio interviews with Fischer on <Bombo Radyo> of the Philippines. He also established the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and the Eugene Torre Chess Center, which aim to discover and develop hidden talents from the Philippines' provinces. He was an early coach of Wesley So.

Mar-27-09  pinoymaster77: Draw yun Joey vs Wes, looks like Joey has the inside track on 2nd place so far.
Mar-29-09  spawn2: guys,

mukhang wala sa condition si GM Eugene. Puro draw mga laban, baka may iniinda. Anyways, bawi na lang uli sa Asian Individuals sa May. Punta ako dun para manood. Sana di masyadong mabawasan elo point ni GM Torre para me pag-asa pa within the year to breach 2600. He also needs to defend the PGMA Cup sometime October or is it November.

Mar-29-09  spawn2: GM Torre,

Congrats on your win against GM Bong . Mukhang pwede pa makahabol for 2nd place which you also occupied last year.

Mar-29-09  pinoymaster77: Im not sure if thats updated on the Wes page, if I read it right after 9 rounds, Eugene has 5 pts just a bit behind JP and Joey at 5.5 pts.

Think last 2 games pa.... plus the game to be replayed between Wes and Joey na naging hot topic.

Mar-30-09  spawn2: GM Torre,

Nice win against JP Gomez. 1st place is now out of reach but 2nd place can still be achieve. Another goal is not to lose ELO points for this event so that 2600 will still be within reach.

Good luck with your game against GM Joey!

Mar-30-09  pinoymaster77: spawn2, second the motion. Saw it on the Wes page on Eugene's big win vs JP.

Tough last round match, lets see. Eugene and Joey are just about even I think in their match-ups,I wont be surprised if there's a draw.

Mar-31-09  spawn2: pinoymaster,

GM Torre needs to beat GM Joey to secure 2nd place. If it will be a draw hanggang 3rd or worse 4th place lang sya. He has white so he must go for the jugular. Right now, based on the computation in chessphi, he has earned an additional 1.5 rating points from his games in BoGM2. If he can win against GM Joey (which I know is very tough) baka additional 3 points para sa kanya yun. That will bring his live rating to around 2665. 35 points na lang 2600 level na : )

Mar-31-09  spawn2: pinoymaster,

While driving to work this am, heard Dennis Principe's interview of GM Eugene on his DZSR Sports program

bro, ano specific channel/dial ang DZSR
sa am radio?

Also, dapat magprepare din si Eugene ng mabuti para sa Asian Individuals sa Subic. Another feather to his cup kung makakasali sya sa World Chess Championship qualifier.

Mar-31-09  pinoymaster77: Hi spawn2, noted.

More notes sa pakikinig ko sa interview ni Eugene over DZSR Radio by Dennis Principe (aside from those posted in Wes' page) :

- He ack that while Wes had a sizzling start, he had a slow start

- Aminado siya kulang preparations as he has other concerns taking up his time (probably the business).

- He's hoping to have more time to prepare for the Asian Continental in Subic this May (magpapaalam daw siya sa partner niya na friend naman niya)

- He also feels kulang pa physical conditioning niya, so he will work on that further.

- Kung win nga raw siya vs Joey,2nd siya otherwise will be fighting for 3rd or lower places...

Mar-31-09  spawn2: pinoymaster,

also, anong time sa umaga and everyday ba sya iniair?

Tutuwa ako sa ating dalawa, we are keeping this page alive by our exchanges. Di bale, if Eugene will barge in the Asian Continental malamang madali na sa atin maabot page 100 before the year ends.

Mar-31-09  pinoymaster77: spawn2,
Actually I just listen in to Dennis Principe's program in the am when I'm on the road. Its usually at 930 to 10 am on weekdays on 918 AM Band. Sports chat ata name ng program niya, and he also has website which I will try to recall.

Pero usually about boxing and basketball ang mga focus ni Dennis. He also does the radio anchor for the
PBA games.

Mar-31-09  spawn2: pinoymaster,

mukhang sa tone ng interview ni GM Eugene, di pa sya spent force. Mukhang gustong bumawi sa susunod na tournament. I guess gusto nya sabihin sa atin na dont count me out yet. I still have a lot of surprises/magic hidden in my sleeves. The Tower of Power is not yet ready to crumble.

Tama sya, para syang diesel while si GM Wes parang nakaturbo. Yung last two games nya panalo.

Mar-31-09  kazza83: I am proud to say that Eugene Torre visited our school (Paref-Westbridge School) last February 2005 during our Foundation Day. He gave simul to students and parents and gave lectures on chess. GM Torre, I know you can still kick back and win. Get renewed again for your next tournaments. God bless.. You will always be a chess legend!
Mar-31-09  pinoymaster77: Dennis' website is www.sportsnews.ph but not yet featured the Eugene interview.

I met GM Eugene in a Subic tournament maybe 2 - 3 years ago, and he was very accomodating when I introduced myself. He even gave his namecard as VP of Fianchetto Corp.

Pero nung GMA Cup he was a bit in tournament or serious mode, well that was right before a game and probably he was psyching himself - probably out to prove back then that di pa siya washed up (coz the local players were already dismissing him).

Pag sa games very focussed siya sa board, somewhat intimidating din for younger players knowing he has many aces up his sleeves...

Mar-31-09  pinoymaster77: spawn2, eh siguro dun sa may access sa site ni Master Glenn, since Eugene is his friend we can also ask him to blog here, para magkaroon pa ng further spice, and sana dito ma annotate yun games ni GM El Eugenio.

Diba nagblog minsan Master Glenn sa Wes page, and pina type Eugene ng message for Bggy Wesley. Think they were doing and singing karaoke at sir Glenn's place.

Mar-31-09  pinoymaster77: From the CHESSPHI site, from previous ELO of about 2560 (#345), he's now at 2562.5 (#329) before the Joey game.

All the best in your final game 'Hari ng Chess'.

Mar-31-09  spawn2: kazza83,

its nice for you to drop by. hope to see you more often to air your views on the living legend himself.

Mar-31-09  pinoymaster77: Sharing here the Susan Polgar feature of the PDI column by Roy Luarca, GM Eugene is also mentioned prominently na rumerekta (homestretch run) :

DAPITAN CITY, Zamboanga Del Norte —It’s in the bag for defending champion Grandmaster Wesley So.

So settled for back-to-back draws with GM-candidates Julio Catalino Sadorra and Richard Bitoon to virtually capture his second straight title and the top purse of P200,000 with only one round left in the 2009 Phoenix Petroleum-Dapitan City “Battle of GMs” chess championship at the Dapitan City Resort Hotel here late Sunday.

The 15-year-old high school student from St. Francis-Cavite halved the point with Sadorra in 36 moves of the French and with Bitoon in only 30 of the Sicilian Pelican to raise his score to 15 points in this 11-round tournament hosted by the Dapitan City government headed by Mayor Dominador Jalosjos.

Counting his six victories in the first seven rounds, So totes an insurmountable three-point lead over GM Rogelio Antonio Jr.

(So later drew his un-played sixth-round game with Antonio in 31 moves of a Sicilian.)

GM Eugene Torre, who showed vintage form in winning the third President Macapagal-Arroyo Cup late last year, made the biggest gain with consecutive wins.

Torre outduelled GM Bong Villamayor in 39 moves of the London Opening in the ninth round and GM John Paul Gomez in 46 of the Bogo-Indian in the 10th to bounce back into contention with 12 points, good for third spot.

Antonio trounced Gomez in 41 moves of the Benoni but drew with GM Mark Paragua.

Dresden Olympiad veteran GM Darwin Laylo drew with IM Rolando Nolte in 30 moves of the Center Counter and subdued GM Jayson Gonzales in 33 of the Slav to climb to solo fourth place with 11.5 points.

Mar-31-09  LimSJ: Congrats sa mga chess masters natin!
sa dapitan din yata ang venue ng Palarong Pambansa. last week kasi sa harap ng office nag-practice ang mga students para daw sa mis. occ. sportsfest this 1st week of april 1-4. sana marami na madiskubre natin bright young talents of pinoy chess. lalo na pagka-approve sa DepEd na isali na ang Chess bilang school subject/P.E. subject mula elementary (4-6)hanggang high school.
Mar-31-09  pinoymaster77: Hello LimSJ,welcome to this site and keep on blogging!

O papano ba magiging kalakaran?

Mar-31-09  spawn2: Limsj/kazza83,

can I get your location please?

Also, it warms my heart to see kids from the elementary level going out of national bookstores carrying chess sets (I've seen a number of them this past few months). This can be the result of the DEP ED ruling making chess as part of the curriculum for grades 3 and up.

I like this <spawn2>! I'm sure mapapangiti ako pag nakita ko mga school children carrying chess sets! I will be tempted to tap their shoulders and say..."keep on playing chess, chess is great!" hehe.
Mar-31-09  spawn2: wordfunph,

Lets see, according to Pichay, by 2010, members of the Philiipine Team to the Olympiad will be an all GM cast with ages below 25 nga ba o 30 years old. Hmm, if the BoGM2 will be the gauge, sablay si mamang pichay. Kasama ang dalawang damatans sa top five GM Antonio and GM Torre : )

Mar-31-09  wordfunph: bro <spawn2>, Pichay for me is not credible..

+ he said that he will bid for RP to host 2008 Dresden Chess Olympiad but went pffftttt..

+ he said he will provide monthly stipend (P25k monthly?) for pinoy GMs with 2600+ but went pffftttt..

I'm so sorry for the guy..
