Fricis (Franz) Apsenieks was born in Tetele, Latvia in 1894 and died in Riga, Latvia 1941. He was one of Latvia's strongest players between the two World Wars. He took 2nd place in the World Amateur Championship in Paris in 1924. He won the Latvian championship in 1927 and 1934, and played in seven olympiads.

  whiteshark: CHESS on page 34 of its December 1941 issue noted that '<Apshenayek>' had died (earlier that year) of pulmonary phthisis, at the age of 47. '<He was an eccentric, and looked it, but a very kind-hearted man.>'
