Jan-31-07  beatles fan: This guy was spoken of very highly in

"THE CHESS ARTIST"

but in there it says he won 5 st. Petersburg blitz tournaments, not 6. Perhaps he won one since the book was written?

Feb-11-07  Caissanist: According to Genna Sosonko's book <Smart Chip from St. Petersburg>, Chepukaitis won the St. Petersburg blitz tournament 6 times, the last time in 2002.

Sosonko also tells a story about a blitz game that Chepukaitis once played with Taimanov in one of the city blitz championships. The game went as follows: 1.d4 d5 2.Bg5?!?! e6??? 3.Bxd8 1-0. Taimanov, who was not happy, shoved all the pieces together and then said to Chepukaitis, "You should be selling beer, not playing chess."

Sep-10-07  TheaN: According to BIDMONFA Chepukaitis died 05-09-2004, which is one month (04-09-2004) after his last game. What a shame... usually you notice that retired players live on for at least a few years. Was he struck by something fatal besides old age? I guess so, otherwise he wouldn't be playing chess anymore in April.
Sep-10-07  Calli: "died 05-09-2004" Yes, but thats the European format: DD-MM-YY. He died September 5, 2004.
Sep-12-07  TheaN: Oh XD. I try not to mix those up (his games here are displayed in US format), but BIDMONFA confused me (his DoB should've cleared it up though, didn't see it). Well, anyway, 5 months is not too much either.
Apr-13-08  DarthStapler: This guy was an all-time great, but I only heard of him a few days ago
