Aug-03-06  iWaNnAbAgM: So<fevered cheek>where should we finish the game?
Aug-03-06  fevered cheek: i have a friend with a premium membership, he'll let us use his forum. his username is seven trumpets
Aug-03-06  iWaNnAbAgM: Alright,so when do you wanna start?
Aug-03-06  fevered cheek: let's start now, i have about an hour before i have to go
Oct-15-06  Loisp: hiarcs 9 cannot find the classic sac Bxh7 after 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 Qc7 7. Nf3 Ne7 8. a4b6 9. Bb5+ Bd7 10. Bd3 Nbc6 11. O-O O-O on my pc(chessbase gui). i heard about 'agressive' mode, how is it activated?
Oct-15-06  Albertan: Hi Loisp to activate "aggressive" mode in Hiarcs 9, first click on the engine menu, then click on "change main engine" then click on "engine parameters" and go into the "playing style window" and change it to "aggressive" if it is not already set there.

Nov-08-06  James Bowman: I have Hiarcs running on my Dell Axim handheld, I have no Idea what playing strength it is, but it is very suseptable to attacks on the H file in a semi-closed position. In an open position where it can give itself chances on both sides of the board it kills me. This is using the fruit engine that comes with it. I get very bored playing it as the games are always are very similar and I am going to load some more engines and try them. Maybee I will download some games as an example.

Jan-02-08  Karpova: Hiarcs won the 17th International Paderborn Computer Chess Championship with 5.5/7 ahead of Rybka (also 5.5/7 but a slightly worse Buchholz). http://wwwcs.uni-paderborn.de/~IPCCC/

Hiarcs drew Rybka, Cluster Toga (third place with 5.0/7), Spike and won all the other games.

Open Defence: any idea what platform HIARCS was running on at Paderborn ? are there any strength differences between the Mac and Windows versions ?

Open Defence: how does one perform analysis using the engine directly without the GUI I believe this is by typing commands through the <root> ?
Jun-29-08  Jim Bartle: I downloaded the free version of Hiarcs the other day and find something odd. If I give it an hour for forty moves, it seems to use 40 minutes for the first twenty moves (including however many are in its opening database), then ends up with 30 seconds or so per move as move 40 approaches.

Anybody else find the same problem?

Jun-29-08  Red October: you could ask on the hiarcs forum www.hiarcs.net

Anybody else find the same problem?> I'm not sure about this, but maybe it's because it's the free version of Hiarcs. Generally engines will spend much more time for the first 8 moves or so, and then play faster. It's a strategy. If they enter in a good middle/endgame, they won't have to spend so much time to keep the advantage they got in the opening/middle game. When in endgame, if you use an endgame tablebase, then it will use it, so I guess it has an accurate judgment of the position without thinking that much. Thesedays I usually let play Deep Shredder 11 on FICS, and of course it spend much more time in the first moves (not the very begining since I use an opening book) it thinks. I never calculated the proportion. I also have Hiarcs 12, but I find it worse than Hiarcs 11, so I don't even use it. Last time I tested it, it lost on time in a 20 minutes game, which is unnormal for a chess engine. It's quite likely a problem of my engine, not the Hiarcs 12 you may buy. I have to check it out.

Jun-29-08  Jim Bartle: Thanks to both.

<So why am I suddenly showing you my private collection of chess engine test games? Well, because for the first time in my life there is a chess engine which solved all of the above in less than a minute. I can state with certainty that HiArcs 14 is the strongest chess engine for the PC that I have ever seen. Look it up at www.hiarcs.com.

This is not a paid advertisement.

Test your engine.>

Jan-29-15  waustad: When upgradingto the latestversion of Os X it nuked my old free HIARCS. Looking at their website I wonder if it is worth it to go for the deep version. I'm probably not strong enough to need all of the extra features, but the tablebase interface could be valuable.
Jan-30-15  zanzibar: <waustad> You might consider trying SCID (Shane's Chess Information Database).

Here's the download link for Mac OS X v4.4:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/sci...

I believe it comes with an older version of Stockfish. The lastest version is available here:

https://stockfish.s3.amazonaws.com/...

(Hey, I'm out of date, I only have v5)

Another engine I'm fond of is Critter 1.6a - with a good style of play and a rating of 3174 it's more than adequate for a second opinion:

http://www.vlasak.biz/critter/count...

SCID is great software, if you don't know it, give it a try.
