I have been working on Agaards' excelling at combinational play for a while, and for me it was too difficult to grasp the concepts presented and most of the puzzles I have tried (did not try them all) I could not solve. Now I am reading Learn Chess Tactics from John Nunn. It is more suitable for my level of solving chess puzzles.
For example, Agaard explaines the very basic ideaas of combinations in 3 pages (Eco Thema selection, basic ideas liked ouble thread, deflection, pinning etc) where John Nunn uses several pages for each theme. Maybe after finishing John Nunn, I give Agaard another try! |
Jan-01-08 | | Everett: Those combinations at the end are not easy at all. I see about 2 or 3 out of the 6 per page, and not all the possible defenses. The positional book, and the exercises, are really, really good, and different.... and difficult. I think they're improving my vision and understanding more than any recent material. I know many don't appreciate his "pot shots" at other chess book authors, yet I don't think his opinions are unreasonable, and it's refreshing (to me) to hear a very good player make commentary on the various books out there. Good luck with your study!

Apr-09-08 | | Freelix: GM Aagaard wrote a well-received book on the Dutch Stonewall a few years back. Interestingly, he doesn't play this variation (or even the Dutch) in a single game in chessgames. Isn't this strange? |
Apr-10-08 | | DarthStapler: I have some books by this guy |
Nov-03-08 | | Silverstrike: I've seen this guy a couple of times in various tournaments around Scotland. Never played him though... |

Apr-28-09 | | Marmot PFL: Aagaard wrote a book on the Tarrasch Defense, and he doesn't play that either. Why write about the lines you plan to play? |
Jul-31-09 | | wordfunph: Happy Birthday to Jacob Aagard who authored one of best reads...."Inside the Chess Mind"! |
Mar-02-10 | | A Karpov Fan: Got this guys attacking manual 1, decent material and good explanantions but he could have maybe proof read it just once to avoid all the silly mistakes with spelling/punctuation/grammar. English is not his first language but he must have an English friend -lol- 4/5 stars still tho for a great book |

 | | Troller: Aagaard is now Danish again after having been Scottish for some years. For a small country like Denmark, losing 2 GMs (Danielsen to Iceland & Aagaard to Scotland) is tough on the national team. |

Apr-21-10
 | | GrahamClayton: Aagard is a regular contributor to "Chess" magazine. I have always enjoyed his insighful analysis of the games he presents. |
Jul-31-11 | | DarthStapler: Happy birthday, GM Aagaard! |
Oct-24-11 | | SimonWebbsTiger: congratulations to Jacob -- he was just awarded the FIDE Senior Trainer title at the recently concluded FIDE congress. The FST is awarded if the person is: an IM or GM with at least 2450+ in ELO; author of books; masters one foreign language; has 10+ years of training experience. He's a bit overqualified then! |

Jan-12-12 | | wordfunph: "Tocco declined my hand and said something about my mother and ancient professions. I asked the arbiter if this was entirely appropriate to which he said, 'You won the game,
what more do you want'. Quite right."

Feb-17-13 | | Bowen Island: I have not read through all six pages of posts on Aagaard here, but find something a bit odd. Aagaard wrote an Everyman Chess book titled "Dutch Stonewall" in 2000 (reprinted in 2002). Yet there are no Dutch games on this site by Aagaard and none in the above mentioned book. Don't get me wrong, I like the book and find it most helpful, just that one would expect a player to be asked to write a book on an opening which he was experienced in playing. |
Aug-11-13 | | waustad: <bowen>I found some on chess365 where he played the Dutch, but mostly as white. There were however 2 where he played black there: http://www.365chess.com/game.php?gi... and http://www.365chess.com/game.php?gi... |
Dec-13-13 | | Bowen Island: Thank you, waustad, for finding those games. I enjoyed playing over them. |

 | | Sally Simpson: I once made a total cock up of a Brilliancy prize Jacob should won. He should have won it but I gave it to a game he lost. Full story here:

Jul-31-15 | | Everett: Really enjoy all of his books. His last series is well beyond me, but I keep gravitating toward his texts on positional play. |
