Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-19-07  sneaky pete: Obituary from the British Chess Magazine, August 1921:

Another of the Viennese "old masters" died on June 13th, namely Jacques Schwarz, aged sixty-five. The nephew of a well-known expert, Adolf Schwarz, the deceased, who was born in Moravia, came to Vienna in the late '70's and learnt chess when he was studying for the Law - a profession which he afterwards gave up for banking. In play with his uncle and other masters, he made rapid progress, and in 1881 he competed in the international tournament in Berlin, tieing for seventh place in very distinguished company. At Nuremberg in 1883 he was ninth in another very strong field. We rely on <Deutsches Wochenschach> for the accuracy of these details, since the ordinary chess records fail to make any distinction between Herr J. Schwarz and his more celebrated uncle.

Telemus: Ehn gives a different dob: 27 Sept 1855 in Arad, and he calls him "Jakob (Jacques) Schwarz" ("Geniales Schach im Wiener Kaffeehaus 1750-1918".

Tabanus: Romania Vital Records 1607-1914 has a Jakob Schwarz b. 27 Sep 1855 in Arad, Romania, parents Salomon and Eleonore Schwarz.

But if born in Moravia...

Telemus: According to Ehn, the uncle Adolf Schwarz was a merchant in Arad, then in Budapest, before he moved to Vienna.

Ehn vs DWS: don't know who I'm betting on.

Telemus: Adolf Schwarz: WSZ 1911, p 34 confirms Arad and Budapest, but not being a merchant.

Tabanus: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial... Find a Grave is just guesswork I suppose. There are family trees with various Jakob Schwarz's and some of them also claim 1855 Arad Romania.

Telemus: Well, the gravestone has 1855 - 1921, if I read this correctly.

On the other hand, the funeral of our man was in the "Neuer Friedhof" (15 June 1921): http://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/a... . And this source distinguishes it from "Zentralfriedhof" mentioned by findagrave (where also New Jewisch Cemetery is mentioned).

Confusing.

Tabanus: Yes.. There are just too many Jakob Schwarz's born in 1855.

Tabanus: <parents Salomon and Eleonore Schwarz> It says Eleonore Katscher.

There is a marriage in Arad 27 Nov 1877 between Salomon Schwarz age 49 and Bineth Juliana Kürtics (??) age 35.

Then there is marriage in Köln 8 Nov 1889 between Bertha Schwarz age 27 and Julius Theodor Hofmann age 49. Parents of Dorothea being Salomon Schwarz and Eleonore geb. Katzscher.

Hmmm. There is a family tree called <Hamilton Tree Revised on 18th March 2012>. They have this on Salomon:

Birth 19 Aug 1826 Secovce, Trebišov District, Košice Region, Slovakia

Birth (Alternate) 19 Mar 1826 • Galszecs, Hungary

Occupation 1850 - 1888 • great synagogue Brno Ober Cantor

Marriage 2 Jan 1852 Slavkov u Brna, South Moravia, Czech Republic to Eleanor Katscher (1836–1916)

<Birth of Son Jakob Jaques Schwarz 27 Sep 1855 • Arad, Romania>

Birth of Daughter Clothilde Schwarz 12 November 1858 • Brno, Moravia

Birth of Daughter Mina Schwarz 10 Oct 1860 • Brno, South Moravia

Birth of Daughter Bertha Schwarz 5 Apr 1862 • Brno, South Moravia

https://www.geni.com/people/Salomon... confirms. So this Cantor must have been a while in Arad then..

Tabanus: https://books.google.no/books?id=lh... seems to say the first organ was introduced in the synagogue in Arad and that Salomon Schwarz was singing there. So that the family probably moved back to Brno right after Jakob's birth. I'm more or less convinced and added the date..
Sep-18-20  SebSchwarz: Hello everyone!

I am a descendant of Jacques (he was my 2nd great-grandfather) and am pleased about your interest in his bio! I started working on the family tree a while ago and was surprised to see he had a career in chess.

To clear some things up:
- He was born in Arad on 27 Sept 1855 to Salomon Schwarz and Eleonore (b. Katscher) - the info about "Moravia" is wrong, the editor(s) made a mistake there. Also, some sites, including Wikipedia, took the wrong birth date.

- Salomon and Eleonore were married in 1852 in Slavkov u Brna (German "Austerlitz") and around that time they moved to Arad, Hungary/Romania. In 1858, when their third child was born, they moved to Brno and Salomon was hired as Ober Cantor temporarlily. In 1860 the employment became permanent until his death in 1889.

- The memorial on findagrave.com was put up by myself. Jacques' grave is on the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna in the Jewish section. And since there are two Jewish sections (old and new), this one is called the "New Jewish" cemetery/section.

- Jacques died on June 13 and was buried on the 15th. I guess the dates are being used interchangeably.

Hope that helped!

Sebastian
