Dec-15-06 | | TIMER: This is a very sad story. But the law is based on beyond reasonable doubt (that is over 90%), so he might be found not guilty even if he is likely guilty as AdrianP said. I thought he showed typical misunderstanding of what chess was about the way he used it against her (non-chess players can often be taken in by 'magic qualities' of strong chess players). He would have been better describing it as some psychological problem than her scheming for revenge (to make more sense), although then it could be argued back that he caused the problems by rape etc. It is very sad if he is guilty and got away with it- but then his conscience would have to hurt. On AdrianP's point, could they try a civil court like where OJ Simpson was found probably guilty, in order to get compensation and some sense of justice? |

 | | Domdaniel: <chancho> Please, not the Daily Mail. It is not a serious newspaper. Would those people still being voyeuristic about this horribly sad 'story' remember that it's real? And that quite a few regular members here knew Jessie? Just leave it. Even the thread about the media misrepresentation of 'the chess mind' is not in good taste here. Somewhere else, by all means. One small gesture of respect would be to avoid using this page for rants about some strong feeling of your own - whether's it is suicide, sexual abuse, god, guilt, the law, the media, or anything else. Like: <The grim ripper will get you!>.
Words fail me. Though not quite as much as they failed the writer of this. |

 | | chancho: <Domdaniel> I found the link to the arrest of Jessie's mother and thought it was worth posting the link on this page. My apologies to all those who were offended by this. |

Dec-18-06 | | Amulet: <Domdaniel:>
Sorry for all those offended by my line, in fact that is a certainty for all of us, that all of us who were born are destined to die. However we should not be disheartened by this reality, because this will make us aware of our frailty, which will make us be careful of what we do in life, because sooner or later we will stand before our creator, and make account of all the hurtful words we said. How much more were the crimes commited.
Oops, my apology again. |
|
Dec-18-06 | | TIMER: <Domdaniel> I remember playing against her, she was a good sport and analysed after a loss. (There are some fairly well-known even popular players who were very disrespectful after losing, so this was a good quality) Maybe it is best to remember the good things like that rather than dwell on all these speculations on the terrible events that occurred. |
|
Dec-19-06 | | AdrianP: <TIMER> <could they try a civil court like where OJ Simpson was found probably guilty, in order to get compensation and some sense of justice?> It's a reasonably thorny area of English law, but in principle, yes, she could have brought a civil claim, and that would probably be a claim which could now be brought by her estate. Compare the Van Hoogstraten case (not guilty in criminal proceedings, but a civil claim successful) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/... It's another question entirely whether a civil judgment would be much use to anyone. |

|
Mar-22-07 | | waddayaplay: It has happened several times that kids have made up these kind of stories to get back at their father or step-father. And it is not so funny for a man to spend 10 years in prison for such a disgusting crime if he didn't commit it. Unfortunately the courts have been prone to accept the childrens testimonies even when there is not any other evidence at all to back up their stories (including physical / gynaecological examination). |

 | | Domdaniel: Thanks, CG, for keeping the flame going for another year. A wonderful young woman, who unfortunately hit the wall marked 'utter misery' and saw no way to avoid it. It would be nice to think that some part of her essence still existed somewhere. I don't think it's likely: but it would be nice. |
