NIKITA VITIUGOV
(born Feb-04-1987, 38 years old) Russia (federation/nationality United Kingdom)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Born in St Petersburg, Nikita Kirillovich Vitiugov became a Grandmaster in 2006. He came second in the World Youth Championships in 2006 in Herceg Novi and was a member of the gold-medal-winning Russian team at the World Team Championship (2010) in Bursa, winning individual gold for second reserve, scoring 5.5/6 for a TPR of 2940. He also won individual gold playing reserve for the Russian team in the World Team Championship (2011), scoring 4/6 (TPR 2729).

He was U18 European Vice-Champion (2005), U18 Russian Champion (2005), U20 Russian Vice-Champion (2006, 2007), came in at 11th in the Russian Championship Superfinal (2006), was =4th in the Russian Championship Superfinal (2007), won the Russian Championship Higher League (2007) on tiebreak, was fourth in the Russian Championship Superfinal (2008), placed third in Russian Championship Superfinal (2009) behind Alexander Grischuk and Peter Svidler, was knocked out of the first round of the World Cup (2007) but made it to round 4 of the World Cup (2009), before losing to Sergey Karjakin. He also played board 3 for Russia 2 in the Khanty-Mansiysk Olympiad (2010) scoring 6/9 without losing a game, and scored 5.5/11 coming in 5th at the Russian Championship Superfinal (2010). He came second on count back to Le Quang Liem at the Aeroflot Open (2011), when he scored 6.5/9 (+5 -1 =3), and was =5th (10th on tiebreak) with 8/11, a half point from the lead, in the European Championship (2011), a result that qualified him for participation in the World Cup (2011) where he beat compatriot Alexei Bezgodov and Ukrainian GM Anton Korobov in rounds one and two before losing in a minor upset in the third round to Vladimir Potkin. A poor result (3/10) in the Reggio Emilia (2011) reduced his rating by 17 in the bimonthly rating period to 1 March 2012. Mediocre results in the 2011-12 Bundesliga and in the Russian Team Championship (2012) were only partially offset by his solid 7.5/11 in the European Championship (2012), which earned him a place in the World Cup (2013). However, he regained form to place =1st (3rd on tiebreak) in the Russian Championship Higher League (2012) to qualify for the Russian Championship Superfinal (2012), in which he scored 4/9 to finish a point off the lead in a low scoring event. His good form continued into 2013 when he placed =1st at Gibraltar Masters (2013) with 8/10, and then won the Gibraltar Masters (Tiebreaks) (2013) to win first prize.

In October 2012, Vitiugov helped his team Saint-Petersburg Chess Federation to a silver medal in the European Club Cup (2012). In April 2013, playing board 2 he helped his St Petersburg team to a gold medal at the Russian Team Championship (2013). In August 2013, his first round result in the World Cup 2013 was a 2-0 win over young Canadian GM Conrad Holt, which enabled him to progress to the second round where he defeated Austrian #1, GM Markus Ragger. He lost to compatriot Alexander Morozevich in the third round. In October 2013, he won silver playing board 3 for St Petersburg in the European Club Cup (2013).

Vitiugov qualified by rating to participate in the World Cup (2015) where he won his first round game against Armenian GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan but lost his second round game against Le Quang Liem to bow out of the Cup contest.

Nikita Vitiugov won the Russian Championship Superfinal (2021) with 7/11 (+3 -0 =8)

Vitiugov strongly opposed the Russian invasion of Ukraine and decided not to return to Russia after the war began. He has since changed federations to England and rented a flat in that country.

Sep-20-19  torrefan: Hey Nikita is it cold
In your little corner of the world
You could roll around the globe
And never find a warmer soul to know
Oh I saw you by the wall
Ten of your tin soldiers in a row
With eyes that looked like ice on fire
The human heart a captive in the snow
Oh Nikita you will never know, anything about my home I'll never know how good it feels to hold you
Nikita I need you so
Oh Nikita is the other side of any given line in time Counting ten tin soldiers in a row
Oh no, Nikita you'll never know
Do you ever dream of me
Do you ever see the letters that I write
When you look up through the wire
Nikita do you count the stars at night
And if there comes a time
Guns and gates no longer hold you in
And if you're free to make a choice
Just look…

Sep-21-19  cro777: Showing his absolute best chess!

"Vitiugov has played his career somewhat in the shadow of the absolute elite grandmasters, with the exception of three tournament victories: the 2013 Gibraltar Masters, the 2017 Grenke Open and this year's Prague Masters.

In this World Cup he is showing his absolute best chess as he eliminated Sergey Karjakin and now also defeated Wesley So." (Peter Doggers)

Sally Simpson: The lad has become England's new No 1 after transferring federations. This is great news!

Full story here; https://www.chess.com/news/view/vit...

It includes a plea from a worried Karjakin.

"A lot of guys have left. We need to pay attention to this problem, because at some point we will not have members of the national team left and we will have to compete as a second team.

This reduces our overall chess potential in the country. The loss of Nikita Vitiugov is very serious."

It appears Andrey Esipenko will not be leaving...Karjakin continues;

"We can say that this is the only chess player [Esipenko] who will not change his citizenship in the near future.

According to my information, his contract with the Russian Chess Federation even states that Esipenko does not have the right to change it. As for the rest of the guys, I won’t be surprised if others also change their citizenship. I’d rather be surprised if this doesn’t happen,”

Bids for Nepo, Grischuk and Svidler should be addressed to the Kremlin. Haggle, ask if they will do three for the price of two.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Cass,

Ignore what it says on my bio. My federation is Scotland but born in Bethnal Green, London (I was a member of the ECF for one year! ) now live in Edinburgh, been here for 45 years. (much longer than that, I've lived in the same house for 45 years.) Edinburgh without doubt is the most beautiful city in the world.

Support Leyton Orient and Hibernian.
Married (to a Dagenham & Redbridge fan), Two kids, 3 grand children.

Work: As little as possible.
Loves: Chess and The Beatles.

Hates: Dagenham & Redbridge fans (not all of them, just one.)

This lad will encourage others to come to the UK. Some will come north (there are few Ukrainian players up here already but none in this lads class.) and it can only be great for UK chess.

Most Scots I know do not hate the English, just the politicians and English sports commentators.

Regarding the latter I can see why. Scottish winners are British, any Scot who fails at sport is Scottish. e.g. When Andy Murray won Wimbledon he was British. When he got knocked out of Wimbledon the commentators were back to calling him Scottish.
