NIKITA VITIUGOV
(born Feb-04-1987, 38 years old) Russia (federation/nationality United Kingdom)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Born in St Petersburg, Nikita Kirillovich Vitiugov became a Grandmaster in 2006. He came second in the World Youth Championships in 2006 in Herceg Novi and was a member of the gold-medal-winning Russian team at the World Team Championship (2010) in Bursa, winning individual gold for second reserve, scoring 5.5/6 for a TPR of 2940. He also won individual gold playing reserve for the Russian team in the World Team Championship (2011), scoring 4/6 (TPR 2729).

He was U18 European Vice-Champion (2005), U18 Russian Champion (2005), U20 Russian Vice-Champion (2006, 2007), came in at 11th in the Russian Championship Superfinal (2006), was =4th in the Russian Championship Superfinal (2007), won the Russian Championship Higher League (2007) on tiebreak, was fourth in the Russian Championship Superfinal (2008), placed third in Russian Championship Superfinal (2009) behind Alexander Grischuk and Peter Svidler, was knocked out of the first round of the World Cup (2007) but made it to round 4 of the World Cup (2009), before losing to Sergey Karjakin. He also played board 3 for Russia 2 in the Khanty-Mansiysk Olympiad (2010) scoring 6/9 without losing a game, and scored 5.5/11 coming in 5th at the Russian Championship Superfinal (2010). He came second on count back to Le Quang Liem at the Aeroflot Open (2011), when he scored 6.5/9 (+5 -1 =3), and was =5th (10th on tiebreak) with 8/11, a half point from the lead, in the European Championship (2011), a result that qualified him for participation in the World Cup (2011) where he beat compatriot Alexei Bezgodov and Ukrainian GM Anton Korobov in rounds one and two before losing in a minor upset in the third round to Vladimir Potkin. A poor result (3/10) in the Reggio Emilia (2011) reduced his rating by 17 in the bimonthly rating period to 1 March 2012. Mediocre results in the 2011-12 Bundesliga and in the Russian Team Championship (2012) were only partially offset by his solid 7.5/11 in the European Championship (2012), which earned him a place in the World Cup (2013). However, he regained form to place =1st (3rd on tiebreak) in the Russian Championship Higher League (2012) to qualify for the Russian Championship Superfinal (2012), in which he scored 4/9 to finish a point off the lead in a low scoring event. His good form continued into 2013 when he placed =1st at Gibraltar Masters (2013) with 8/10, and then won the Gibraltar Masters (Tiebreaks) (2013) to win first prize.

In October 2012, Vitiugov helped his team Saint-Petersburg Chess Federation to a silver medal in the European Club Cup (2012). In April 2013, playing board 2 he helped his St Petersburg team to a gold medal at the Russian Team Championship (2013). In August 2013, his first round result in the World Cup 2013 was a 2-0 win over young Canadian GM Conrad Holt, which enabled him to progress to the second round where he defeated Austrian #1, GM Markus Ragger. He lost to compatriot Alexander Morozevich in the third round. In October 2013, he won silver playing board 3 for St Petersburg in the European Club Cup (2013).

Vitiugov qualified by rating to participate in the World Cup (2015) where he won his first round game against Armenian GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan but lost his second round game against Le Quang Liem to bow out of the Cup contest.

Nikita Vitiugov won the Russian Championship Superfinal (2021) with 7/11 (+3 -0 =8)

Vitiugov strongly opposed the Russian invasion of Ukraine and decided not to return to Russia after the war began. He has since changed federations to England and rented a flat in that country.

Joshka: This fellow is going to play in the Russia vs USA Internet Match July 10th 2005. Wonder when the pairings will be posted?
Jul-11-05  Knight13: This guy totally crushed Stripunsky in the USA vs Russia Distance Match (2005)!
Jan-21-06  cuendillar: Only untitled player among junior top-20. Becoming a GM should only be a matter of time for him.

Dec-19-07  clocked: trying to take down Moro http://russiachess.org/online/

Time may be an issue though, he
quickly played the obvious 51...Bd7 where 51...a3 would have been nice

Dec-31-08  Jason Frost: Quickly closing on 2700, 2687 on the new list, up 49 from the last one.
Mar-07-09  wolfmaster: Wow, this guy is gonna be 2700 by this summer.. He should start getting invitations to top tournaments. Anybody have his birthdate?
Sep-06-09  Caissanist: Bidmonfa's links almost always give an exact birthdate. For Vitiugov, that site gives April 4, 1987.
Sep-15-09  returnoftheking: shared 2nd place in the 62nd Russian Championship Higher League Tournament
Nov-28-09  DCP23: Vitiugov crosses into 2700+ territory on LiveRating today.
Nov-29-09  returnoftheking: Any info on this GM? Age, style, etc?
Nov-29-09  DCP23: <returnoftheking: Any info on this GM? Age, style, etc?>

22 years, a very strong GM from St.Petersburg. He usually takes the trophy in St.Petersburg city championship when Svidler is not in town ;) You can find some more trivia on him in the posts above. And I have to admit I don't know him that well myself to comment on his style. We are sure to be hearing more about him though.

Nov-29-09  returnoftheking: Ok, thanks. Looking forward to his mini match with Karjakin!
Nov-29-09  technical draw: Not much kibitzing for a 2700+ player. I think I'll put some CB's on him against Karjakin.
Nov-29-09  Plato: <rotk>, <td>

I was impressed with him back in 2006 when he narrowly missed winning the World Junior Championship (losing the last game when he needed just a draw to secure first place).

Here were my comments on his games:

N Vitiugov vs Stellwagen, 2006

<What an incredible display of endgame technique by young Vitiugov!>

N Vitiugov vs Z Andriasian, 2006

<I think Vitiugov just choked. He only needed half a point to secure first place, and it seems like the excitement got to him when the draw was so close at hand. At the critical moment he cracked, unable to withstand the psychological pressure. Overall, though, I think he established himself as the most talented player in the competition, and if he is able to steady himself mentally, N. Vitiugov is another strong grandmaster in the making.>

Nov-29-09  Plato: Still, I think Karjakin is a notch above and will emerge victorious, but I'd be pleasantly surprised if Vitiugov proves me wrong!
Nov-29-09  technical draw: <Plato> I saw the Andriasian game and I think you're right about him choking. I call it the "olympic freeze" it's when you're need to make a simple action and you miss it. Let's see how he does with real, high level competition in a must win situation.

Troller: Congrats on a fine performance in the Team WC. Starting out with a meagre draw in the disastrous match against Greece, Vitiugov scored 5/5 in the rest of the tournament. This is after a very respectable 3rd place in the Russian Championship (TPR 2733). If he wasn't Russian he'd probably get some high-caliber invitations in 2010; being Russian you have to be 2720+ before getting such invitations it seems.
Feb-07-10  wolfmaster: I'd really like to see this guy get invited to a tournament like the Tal Memorial.
Feb-16-11  weisyschwarz: Finished well today at the Aeroflot Open, with a powerful win vs. Cheparinov.
Feb-16-11  Don Cossacks: Congratulations for co-winning Aeroflot 2011!
Apr-25-11  falso contacto: vitiugov has officially no fans.
