in her bio.

Nov-08-21  Z truth 000000001: <<Caisso> Hello again cg'ers. Still getting familiar with the website. I really like the book database. Did not know we had it!>

Welcome, <Caisso>, and best of luck on your efforts.

I do have to wonder, given your friendship with both Daniel and Alberto, where you've been for so long?

(E.g. not knowing the book db, etc. means you must not have visited the site much at all)

Nov-08-21  Schwartz: In opening explorer I suggest having a reverse move option. In addition to the sometimes useful undo, show the percentages and possible moves leading to the diagram.

A what?

WannaBe: <Schwartz> In Opening Explorer, each move is actually a link, so say I am looking at Sicilian:

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3

and I want to go back to 4...Nf6, just click on Nf6 will take back to that position. (Instead of 2 clicks of back arrow)

Nov-09-21  Schwartz: In the modern age we don't use narrative as much, but why not just read a book for that, or conversation? I like ease and I guess the term is transposition. Anyway, it's just what I thought.

Nov-09-21  Z truth 000000001: <Another outage lasting several hours. >

In modern narrative this device is known simply as foreshadowing.

Harry Nelson Pillsbury (kibitz #1031)

<beat> - I thought we fixed utf-8 for kibitzing. It looks like Cyrillic is still broken. It's an important language to handle for a chess site, obviously.

Is it broken? If so, when can we expect a fix?

Just asking.

We don't need no stinking explanations. It's all part of the site's charm.

Nov-09-21  Z truth 000000001: Do we have a self-referential feedback loop?

<Steamed Colleagues>

I experienced our brownout "live" last night in the wee hours. I happened to be working on an important three sentence treatise on a historical chess player nobody has ever heard of, and would never want to hear about for that matter.

Anyhoo I was curious about something. I use the "Is it down right now" website to check if a site is offline. One of its best features is a Facebook comments page that gives valuable information.

So I put <chess.com> into the "Is it down right now" search box, and they were up and running last night, but I took a long look at the many comments. It seems that chess.com was also attacked yesterday: and more than that- they have been attacked many, many more times over the last two years than we have. Click on the "Is it down right now" "view comments" button, and you will see chess.com got hit a day ago, and four days before that as well: https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ch...

Do the same for <chessgames.com> and there are only two comments on "Is it down right now", and one of them is mine from two years ago: https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ch...

There are 597 comments on the <chess.com> comments section. I got tired of scrolling after I hit two years in. I guess they are bigger complainers than us. Of course going by these hundreds of comments over such a long period of time, they have had much bigger trouble with attacks and failures to provide service on their website than we have.

Therefore we are the wieners.

<diceman> lol no.

Actually you read and speak Russian, no? This gentlemen won some serious tournaments in <Siberia> but I can't find much about him. If you can help me he would be happy I bet. Although I think he must be dead now.

It would be great just to know his birth/death dates even:

G. Li

Nyet!
Nyet!

The only "Russian" I've read, is the chess notation in the newspaper 64.

... ?? ? ???? ???????????? ???? ??????????

That says:

...but I can use Google translate!

Nov-10-21  diceman: Well, it did until CG <????????????> it!

Ok got it!

It says <????????????> means <????????????> in Russian.

Is it possible we have all been speaking Russian the whole time?

Not yet. It will probably take a few more weeks. Kibitzing is a large and sensitive feature and when we change it, we want to do it right.

  Susan Freeman: In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below
We are the dead, short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields In Flanders fields
And now we lie In Flanders fields
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields In Flanders fields
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields In Flanders fields

In honour of all our veterans, past and present.

There is also "The Green Fields of France", a wonderful irish song, about the fallen ones in WW1.
