Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: (Un)like <Karposian>, who has daring predictions, my predictions pretty much solely depend on how Topalov is doing :()
Aug-30-15

OhioChessFan: My predictions are almost totally based on how Aronian does. I was massively hoping for a loss against Carlsen.
Aug-30-15  Karposian: One's fall from grace can come swiftly. I've gone from leading all three rankers during the first couple of rounds, to find myself dead last in the Absolute Ranker. My only consolation is that <Penguincw> just lost his lead in the AR. If, God forbid, he should win all three rankers, we would never hear the end of it :)

Penguincw: Don't jinx it <Karposian>. You and I both know that I'm the master of choking. Otherwise, you would not have won a bronze at the Gashimov Memorial, Standard Ranker.

< If, God forbid, he should win all three rankers, we would never hear the end of it >

That would be nice. I can continue to build my historic resumé, as I would then become the first user to ever win a triple crown twice here.

Aug-31-15
Premium Chessgames Member
  Penguincw: <lostemperor>

Obviously it sucks, but I'm not going to be too bothered. As long as I still place first in one other contest, and I remain ahead of the golden king, I'll be quite happy of my performance.

However, don't expect it to last long <lostemperor>. Your 3 jackpots are "Player-above-Topalov", meaning if Topalov goes 2/2, ouch. Meanwhile, mine is a bit safer, as Aronian is ahead of Nakamura by 1.5 points. :)

lostemperor: With strong predictions in particular on Aronian, <Penguincw> and <Robin01> both won two of the three Rankers!! <Robin01> winner of the absolute Ranker and Square Ranker, this tied with <Penguincw> winner Square and pair betting Ranker! Congrats!!

Only one ♔ will be included into the Hall of Fame however according to the rule that only unique players will be awarded gold medals (in the Square and Pair Betting Rankers (or who otherwise would not be awarded).

<call14> receive Silver in the Absolute ranker and third in the Square. Your contest manager <lostemperor> manage squeeze himself in with a Silver in the Pair betting ranker, where <Penguincw> took first and <Robin01> third! :)
