Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

SwitchingQuylthulg: Thanks to <lostemperor> for running the contest, and congratulations to the medalists!

Predicting Anand would do badly was the key.

moronovich: Thanks to <lostemperor>for running the show and congratulations to the winners !

Predicting Anand doing fine, was my key :)

Dec-14-15  Fiona Macleod: Hmmmn. I can be a hall of famer here too. Seems easy to me. Just go by the ratings...

OhioChessFan: Thanks for running the contest <Yoda>
Dec-14-15  alfamikewhiskey: Thank you!

(And thank you, Mickey "The Spider" Adams for the very good performance :))

Dec-14-15  Fiona Macleod: there are 14 players for Tata, but one actually only has to guess the final standings of 12. For Carlsen eats everyone while Van Wely is eaten by everyone so they would be 1st and 14th respectively. As to the remaining 12, a safe bet to be at the bottom would be Hou Yi Fan but who knows if she could eat Navara. Tomashevsky eats So, but I think Karjakin would eat Toma. Girl seldom eat, Caruana sometimes also do not eat at all and just stares at his opponents and shake hands. So had eaten Ding before but I think he can't do that all the time. He can eat Adams but only if they meet at the latter part of the tournament, not when Adams is still fresh. So I guess it is wise to wait for the pairings before making predictions.
Dec-14-15  Karposian: Thanks for running this exciting contest, <lostemperor>. Always great fun. For me the key was picking MVL to do well. Congrats to <Switch> and <alfamike> for winning golds and to <lostemperor> for picking up some medals, just like me.

See you all at Tata Steel!

Dec-14-15  WinKing: Thanks <lostemperor> for keeping track of the results.

Congrats to those that did well! Since this contest was just for fun I will not be listing these medals in my forum.

WannaBe: <lostemperor> Thank you for hosting another exciting tournament prediction contest.

Congrats to <Switch> & <alphamikewhiskey>!

P.S. Are you making a cameo in the new Star Wars movie?

Dec-14-15  YouRang: Thanks <lostemperor> for running the contest and congratz to the winners.

My apologies for stinking up your forum with my lousy predictions, but someone has to prop up the winners.

Penguincw: Ouch two 4th place finishes and one in 5th place.

But doesn't hurt as much as <Karposian>, who won his first ever medal, a silver, but unfortunately for him, this contest doesn't count for anything.

Congrats to all the other medalists, and thank you <lostemperor> for hosting. Hope you do well once the force awakens (get it), and see ya in the new year.

Dec-15-15  Golden Executive: Thanks <lostemperor> for running the contest and congratulations to all the winners.

Good to see the contest for Tata Steel 2016 is going to be for real!

Dec-15-15  wordfunph: <lostemperor> great thanks!

cheers to all the winners!
