Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: Same predictions leaders after round 12.

A bad day however for <MAGNUS CARLSEN> who saw his old, and perhaps favourite, foe Anand slipped from the shared lead in Moscow although it gained him predictions points with 2 rounds and one rest day to go!

lostemperor: Oh wait <rogge> of course has taken over the lead again in the pair bettings with the potential leaders' Jackpot <$25.00,Caruana-equal-Karjakin>!
Mar-26-16  Golden Executive: <lostemperor: Oh wait <rogge> of course has taken over the lead again in the pair bettings with the potential leaders' Jackpot <$25.00,Caruana-equal-Karjakin>!>

Amazing potential Jackpot since no matter what happens in the next round, it will be decided until the last one with Karjakin-Caruana!

Mar-27-16  MarbleSkull: Naka beating Topalov seems good for me. Anand beating Svidler would be great too, but there's almost no chance. Anand's wins have all been with the white pieces.

lostemperor: Congratulations to Karjakin for winning the candidates in Moscow!!

The three top winners in the predictions are <SwitchingQuylthulg> <Beholder> and <WannaBe>!!

After gold in Tata, <SwitchingQuylthulg> again won first here in two rankers and Bronze, winning the tie-breaker with <Beholder>.

<<WannaBe> won the Pair Bettings here after also having silver at this ranking in Tata chess!

Silver and Bronze for <MarbleSkull>!<moronovich> Bronze after being the biggest winner at Tata Steel chess! <whiteshark> also in the prizes, third in the square ranker!

OhioChessFan: Wow, I went from mediocre to terrible at the end. Thanks Yoda, for running the show.
Mar-28-16  YouRang: Thanks <lostemperor> for a job well done again.

Congrats to the medal winners, especially those that foresaw Karjakin's big win.

Much appreciation to <Penguincw> for dramatically taking over most of the cellar positions in the final round. Still, I can credit my own dismal placement primarily to Topalov's crash-and-burn performance.

OhioChessFan: Topa cost me big time, too. But sometimes you have to take a chance.

I'm rather upset with myself for not following these prescient words of wisdom by someone whose name starts with K and rhymes with Barposian after the last contest:

<Oh and by the way, <Penguincw> finished in 20th place out of 22 contestants in all three contests. So, a good tip for anyone who wants to do well in this contest is this:

Copy <Penguincw>'s suggestions, just remember to turn them upside down! You are guaranteed to get a good result.>

Mar-28-16  rogge: Fun as always. Congrats to the winners, and thanks to <lostemperor> :)
Mar-28-16  MarbleSkull: Thanks for running this, <lostemperor>. Fun as always, see you next candidates.

The biggest mistake I made was underestimating Karjakin. He had a great tournament, props to those who predicted it.
