Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: I see that <offramp> is equal third to the penny, with <Golden Executive> in the pair betting ranker what does not occur often unless they happen to have identical predictions!

Apr-25-16  Golden Executive: Not that I am aware of, I am a bit surprised.

It wouldn't be big deal but there are some implications in the Pair Betting Ranker (v.gr: will never get a jackpot, but a semi-jackpot instead)

lostemperor: Many on medal positions, <Karposian> (absolute- and square ranker) and <alfamikewhiskey> (pair betting ranker) having an edge, with the field still close together with 3 rounds to go!
Apr-25-16  Karposian: <lostemperor: Have you heard of my the first time I predicted the number of moves in a game? It was an immediate hit which gave me a taste for it!>

No, I don't think I've heard it. What happened? Sounds like a great story.

lostemperor: <Karposian> It is a beautiful story! :). During the game predictions organised by <cu8sfan> even before <YouRang> took over I predicted Kasparov vs Leko to be a draw. To add drama to it I decided to give the number of moves also I expected it to last. 31 moves.

Here where I made the prediction XXII Torneo Ciudad de Linares (2005) <Kasparov-Leko 1/2 (31 moves)>

I forgot or did not even bother to check the number of moves untill much later. It struck my mind, actually blew it since I only then remebered, when I did check that game here Kasparov vs Leko, 2005

:0 <;)

Apr-26-16  Golden Executive: <offramp: <Golden Executive: Maybe this time <offramp>'s strategy can work, check this out: lostemperor chessforum (kibitz #5067) :)> Probably just a coincidence.>

Mmmmmmhh......a fantastic one, then.

Well, the best thing I can do now is to wish you a triple crown. ;)

Apr-26-16  Karposian: <lostemperor: During the game predictions organised by <cu8sfan> even before <YouRang> took over I predicted Kasparov vs Leko to be a draw. To add drama to it I decided to give the number of moves also I expected it to last. 31 moves.>

Whoa! When you're off to a great start like that, no wonder you were inspired to make more moves predictions. Great story.

These contests are so much fun. Both your contest and <Golden Executive>'s contest, of course, but I must say that the Moves Prediction Contest is for me the most fun, because of the many possibilities: every round becomes very exciting and unpredictable. One can score big, like I did the day before yesterday, or one can fail miserably, and easily end up with zero points on a bad day.
