Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Apr-30-16  rogge: Without relying on Carlsen's predictions I'm doing all right, it seems :)

Thanks to our host <lostemperor>, and congrats to all medalists!

Apr-30-16  alfamikewhiskey: Thank you for hosting!
Apr-30-16  WinKing: Thanks <lostemperor> for running & hosting an extremely exciting contest! We did not know who was going to win this thing until the 9th round.

Congratulations to all of the medal winners! Special gratz to <rogge>, <SwitchingQuylthulg> & <WannaBe> each grabbing a gold in the 'ABSOLUTE RANKER FINAL'. <rogue> also had a gold in the 'SQUARE RANKER FINAL'.

Special kudos to <Keyser Soze>! You picked up a gold in the 'PAIR BETTING RANKER FINAL'. My records show this as being the first gold medal you have ever won, nicely done! Welcome to the 'Hall of Fame'! :)

Penguincw: Thanks to <lostemperor> for hosting. Congrats to the gold medalists, and the other medalists too.

As for <Karposian>, congrats for blowing your lead. Very much expected that. As for me, you predicted I would end up with a "triple clown", and look, I avoided that fate. >:p

<lostemperor> When is the next contest (Gashimov Memorial)?

Apr-30-16  YouRang: Thanks <lostemperor> for running the contest. Congrats to all of the medalists.
Apr-30-16  Karposian: Thanks <lostemperor> for another great contest. This is always so much fun. Congratulations to the winners, and to <Penguincw> for avoiding the "triple clown" :)
Apr-30-16  Keyser Soze: Hey <lostemperor>, thanks very much for hosting. Great fun!

I guess I got that beginner's luck. o:)

cheers

Apr-30-16  Keyser Soze: <winking> Hey thanks pal :o)

Apr-30-16  suenteus po 147: Thank you, <lostemperor> for running this contest! I'm already looking forward to the next one :)
Apr-30-16  Golden Executive: Thanks <lostemperor> for running and commenting another excellent contest! and kudos for your double crown in the GPC.

Congratulations to all the other medal winners, particularly <Keyser Soze> for entering the Hall of Fame!.

<offramp> No problem :). If in round 8 Eljanov had won instead of losing his game with white versus Li Chao, now we would be celebrating a triple crown, even after splitting the pay-offs. Shame on you Eljanov!
