 | | lostemperor: <EmperorAtahualpa> anytime. My forum is supposed to be also for comments, datas, etc. Not just predictions:). Everyone is welcome to do so like in your forum I see. Btw. you organise a chessbabe contest. I like to ask you, if I want to submit two identical chess twin sisters, must I take two places to seed them. Since it goes without saying that one is as pretty as the other. Not to mention who of the two is prettier. That might be a problem also! |

 | | lostemperor: Ok here the answer to the quizquestion regarding Kramnik's pull out of Corus 2006: <Which player was a last minute replacement in a strong international tournament and won shared first place there then? Two clues: this player is playing in this year's Corus A and he was a replacement for Vladimir Kramnik also.> The answer is Boris Gelfand in 1996. A correct answer from <Ibelox>. In the tournament report Gelfand has hesitated when short before the tournament he was invited as replacement for Kramnik. He said "often as a replacement you either play very good or very bad. Since I had had the first before I assume now maybe good". Besides Gelfand and co-winner Piket also playing were: Shirov, Leko, Karpov, Adams, Sutovsky, Almasi, Svidler, Lautier and Judit Polgar. Strikingly perhaps, one of his three wins was, like in yesterday's Corus game, also against Michael Adams Gelfand vs Adams, 1996. |

 | | tpstar: <must I take two places to seed them> Have fun. ;>D |
|
| Jan-17-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: If these two are pretty, they don't need to be seeded anywhere, they can sit on me! :) |
|
Jan-18-06
 | | lostemperor: Ooooops!
Sorry about that. I mean two ladies of equal beauty obviously! Forgive me my English sillyness what made me unaware, for a moment, of the other meaning of seed. Ouch. |
|
| Jan-18-06 | | fxenderby: HI, I think I somewhere got to know that you are actually in Wijk, or live nearby.. well I'm going to be in Amsterdam on the 26th and I intend spending the 28th in Wijk to watch the games.. Could you tell me which train or bus do I have to take from Amsterdam? I understand I have to leave from Amsterdam's centrl station, but I don't know the with which line... and specially I don't know if I may count with something like 20 trains a day, or maybe two!
sorry if you are the wrong person.. and sorry for the time taken.. |
|
Jan-18-06
 | | lostemperor: <fxenderby> I always go by car to Wijk aan Zee. I think you can simply ask the receptionist at Amsterdam central station how to go. They can perfectly tell you. Make sure you pronounce Wijk aan Zee correctly (Wike aan Zay). I know, the closest trainstation is Beverwijk (Bayverwike) probably in the direction Haarlem (but check that out). A train will go there every hour at worst. From Beverwijk it's simple to take a bus. Good luck and enjoy your stay there which I'm sure you will!! |
|
Jan-18-06
 | | lostemperor: This may help for now http://www.ns.nl/servlet/Satellite?... Type from Amsterdam to Beverwijk |
|
| Jan-18-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: <fxenderby> Another good site for you might be http://www.9292ov.nl which is a website that has all public traffic in the Netherlands in its system. Just enter your address of departure, your address of arrival and a time when you would like to depart (or arrive), and a complete schedule is presented to you! |
|
| Jan-18-06 | | fxenderby: very nice!
thanks a lot..
everybody is dutch 'round here?
looking forward to get there myself!! |
|
Jan-18-06
 | | lostemperor: And where are you from fxenderby? |
|
| Jan-18-06 | | fxenderby: I'm brazilian. We've had our quota of dutch people in the XVIII! Just kidding, I live in southern Brazil, very far from the dutch settlements on the northeastern shores. I will visit the Netherlands just as a tourist, on my weird way to France with my wife. If you plan being in Wijk on the 28th say something and let's meet. I will try to meet Bobak Zahmat also, but as I don't come very often to check the forums, I don't know what I'm going to do to find him and, or, you.
Cheers |
|
| Jan-18-06 | | YouRang: <lostemperor> FYI - I am working on a program that will parse final standing predictions from the chessgames.com site and produce reports based on the results. I expect that it will save you a lot of work once it's running. It's not ready yet, but I thought I'd give you a 'heads up'. |
|
Jan-18-06
 | | lostemperor: <fxenderby> here is a Brazilian champion from the Dutch settlements Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk.
If I'm there on 28th I will let it know and try to look for someone latin with a wife. Assuming you look latin. It is very crowded in the weekends but you can't miss the chance to see the chessstars. <YouRang> that is welcome news. If you have more about it please let me know! |
|
| Jan-18-06 | | YouRang: <lostemperor> I think I have the parsing code working pretty well. One wrinkle is that Kramnik was replaced by Mamedyarov. If anyone posted a prediction involving Kramnik, and did NOT post an updated prediction involving Mamedyarov, I just replaced Kramnik with Mamedyarov in their prediction post. (I figure that's preferable to throwing their prediction away.) I am working on reports now. Here is the first report: <Average Ranking Report>
This report accumulates all of the final standing predictions, and shows the average predicted rank for each player, as well as the range. AvgRnk,Player,LoRank,HiRank
1.69,Topalov,1,5
1.99,Anand,1,6
4.26,Aronian,1,12
4.29,Leko,1,10
5.59,Ivanchuk,2,12
6.38,Bacrot,1,12
7.32,Gelfand,3,14
8.20,Adams,2,14
9.16,Mamedyarov,1,14
9.20,Karjakin,3,13
9.56,Kamsky,2,14
10.56,van Wely,3,14
12.44,Sokolov,6,14
12.61,Tiviakov,7,14
For instance, Karjakin has an average rank of 9.20. No one picked him to finish higher than 3rd, or worse than 13th. |

 | | lostemperor: <YouRang> That is fine! As a matter of fact I am doing the same for the Kramnik predictions. I have already put a Kramnik predictionresult on the Coruspage and I was gong to publish it here again also in full. But do you think it is possible to use a spreadsheet (like excel orso) that will calculate the preditions of people? So you only need to put fill in all the stanings' predictions and the final standings at the end of the tournament and it will calculate the predictions' differences automatically? |
|
| Jan-18-06 | | YouRang: <lostemperor> Rather than use Excel, I would just have my program produce that report directly (i.e. to show how well different contestants did with their final standings predictions). That will be the next report I work on. When I get it working, I'll post some results -- showing who the winners would be if the current standings (after 4 rounds) hold up. |
|
| Jan-19-06 | | fxenderby: Cool. I don't know if I look latin. Or, as a matter of fact,I don't know what is the latin look for the dutch opinion. I guess I may even look nigerian to you. When we were both younger (though I have to tell you I have aged in a much less dignified way) people used to say I looked like Ronaldo, the soccer player (the one who plays for Real Madrid, not the Barcelona one..). My wife looks unlatin. She looks more duth than van Wely, for instance... less stereotipically dutch. But she won't be with me. For some misterious unfathomable motive she does not seem to think that watching Anand vs Topalov may be something worth a day in Europe.. Well. I'll be there. Probably trembling from the cold and looking tourist-stupid. By the way, any dutch-must-see? We'll tour Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague and maybe Delft. But we're only staying in Amsterdam. Sorry about the offtopicness. thanx |
|
Jan-19-06
 | | lostemperor: <YouRang> nice, that's what I had in mind. I like to give standings after each rounds but that's too much work. It would be fine if things can get automated. Please let me know when it works, you big monster :) |
|
Jan-19-06
 | | lostemperor: <fxenderby> Ronaldo it is than! Of Real that is. Your wife look more Dutch than van Wely:)? You'll be in Rotterdam, the Hague and Delft?! When? |
|
| Jan-19-06 | | fxenderby: Well.. thank god it is not the Barcelona player... As regards the dutchness of van Wely, I was only saying that when you say "dutch" to the tipical brasilian, he sees someone more like that WIM on group C (forgot the name..) blonde and everything.. We'll be in Amsterdam between the 26th and the 31st, on the next days we travel by car, to Paris, where we must be till the 8th, on the way we will try to get the most out of the Netherlands and Belgium. But we don't have any predictions.. Where do you live? what do you recomend? |
|
Jan-19-06
 | | lostemperor: <fxenderby> Close to Amsterdam is the most famous typpical Dutch city Volendam. Thare you can make pictures in typpical Dutch clothings and eat Dutch fish. In Amsterdam, you can visit museums (paintings). Maybe you'd like to watch the redlight district (behind the Dam monument). Popular among tourist;). Ask permission of your wife though. Or have a "taste" of Dutch liberalism in wheatmuseum or coffeebars. Rotterdam, you should take the Spido, a boattour through the harbour. In the Hague, you can visit Madurodam, Holland in miniature or the seaside if you like sea. Delft is an old city like Amsterdam with cannels (boatrip), churches. Mail me ( see top of page)just in case. I live in the the Hague area. |
|
| Jan-19-06 | | YouRang: <lostemperor> Here is the <Final Standing Ranker> (based on 5 rounds). The scoring system is similar to what you have used in the past. (Each contestant starts with a "maximum" score, and then has points deducted by the amount that his/her predicted rank differs from the actual rank.) The contestant with the fewest deductions wins. Current standings:
1.ANA/2.TOP/2.IVA/4.GEL/4.KAR/6.MAM/6.ADA/6.ARO/9.TIV/-
9.WEL/9.LEK/9.SOK/13.BAC/14.KAM
Score evaluation method: Absolute value of rank deviation
Maximum score: 91
