Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

Jan-19-06  YouRang: <lostemperor> I could send you some software to do these reports if you like. I'll need an email address.

It's the same program that <cu8sfan> is using, but it references different internal contest management software.

It should be simple for you to use for this tournament, since I've already done most of the work. :-)

In the future, you'll probably want to post some rules (which I can suggest to you) stating the 'proper' way to post final standing predictions. Doing so will save you lots of editing.

Chnebelgrind: <YouRang Rank,Score,UserID> Your Score evaluation method can't be too good. Let <lostemperor> make that please!
Jan-19-06  YouRang: <Chnebelgrind><Your Score evaluation method can't be too good.> Hi Chnebelgrind. Why do you think it can't be too good??

< Let <lostemperor> make that please!> I am not stopping <lostemperor>. I am trying to assist him.

Jan-19-06  YouRang: <Chnebelgrind> Oh, I just noticed why you don't think my method is too good. You're tied for last place! :)

Of course, that might have something to do with your prediction that Aronian would finish first, Leko second, and Anand 4th.

Then again, I notice that I'm not too far from the cellar myself. But don't give up -- there's still time for things to shift around!

Chnebelgrind: <YouRang> You got it. It was careless of me, not to set Topalov and Anand ahead.

lostemperor: <YouRang> some very nice stuff! Thank you. Can you send me some software, although I suck with computers, it is interesting indeed! You can find my e-mail on top.

lostemperor: <YouRang> btw. in cu8sfan predictioncontest I understand your program reads anything that looks like a prediction. Sort of like an extensive search? What technique/ software is that?
Jan-20-06  YouRang: <lostemperor> I just sent you an email. Let me know if you never get it. I don't think you'll have problems figuring out how to make it work. :)
Jan-20-06  YouRang: <lostemperor> Also, it would be interesting if you compare your results (if you have compliled them) with mine. There are probably some differences, but you probably would like to be able to account for them.

lostemperor: <YouRang> I received it. I will let you know. Thanks!

lostemperor: <YouRang>: untill I have a good grasp on your program, you can give the standings after 7 rounds if you wish. I just start checking some results. Comparing them with mine. There are some slight differences but that can be caused by different countings on average (actual) standings. Also I start with a maximum of 196 but that should not be a problem since it´s the differences that counts. I know more soon on these comparings.

lostemperor: Corus is halfway. Here already some unofficial results. The Kramnik predictions (different count). Kramnik withdrew from the tournament because of illness. So we never know what he would have done if he had participated. But it is nice to see the predictions (when it was not known Kramnik was ill). The average standing of Kramnik in the predictions is somewhat lower than 6th place(!) I put the predictions in order of Kramnik standings. Since Kramnik was not able to play the people who put Kramnik lowest in their predictions win the Kramnik contest. I start with the highest standings predictions for Kramnik.(repost since I forgot at least one name :)

<The Kramnik predictions>

1 point. Kramnik put on first place by <infinitycircuit>

3 points. Kramnik put on 3rd place by <alexmagnus, Betsson, mymt>

4 points. Kramnik on 4th; <Elo, firebyrd, hidude, hitman84, swapmeet, UditNarayan>

5 points. Kramnik on 5th: <bobbyboomer petralovski, twinlark, suenteus po 147>

6 points: <AdrianP, Assasinator, Dimweasel, imrath, LanceduLac, nakosonorense, percyblakeney, samsal, strifknot>

7 points: Kramnik on 7th place: <awfulhangover, robin01, TIMER, zarra>

8 points: Kramnik on 8th place: <AnnieK. cu8sfan, Ibelox, thomaspaine>

9 points: Kramnik on 9th: <Dionyseus, madsberg>

10 points: Kramnik on 10th: <Per, The King Returns I, WannaBe>

11 points: Kramnik on 11th place: <YouRang>

The winners: 12 points: Kramnik on 12th place: <EmperorAtahualpa, Fxenderby, VishyFan>

For what its worth!
For more statistics on other players' rankings in the predictions see YouRang's <Average Ranking Report>! Later I may highlight some of those Corusplayers still.

lostemperor: Here statistics on Karjakin who has a surprising well performance (shared 2/3 halfway down the tournament as posted at the Coruspage also). From <YouRang> Average Ranking Report: <9.16,Karjakin,3,13>

Average prediction ranking on Karjakin 9.16. Rating 2660 (13th!). Seeded 10 at the start (of the 14 participants) on odds to win the tournament. Highest prediction on Karjakin 3. Lowest 13 (4x).

lostemperor: <fxenderby> maybe we could meet on 30 or 31st your way to the Hague/Delft Rotterdam, France. That is after corus of course:) If you are still able to contact me I can give you my number.
Jan-23-06  YouRang: Hi <lostemperor> <until I have a good grasp on your program, you can give the standings after 7 rounds if you wish>

lostemperor: Statistics on Boris Gelfand <YouRang: 7.32,Gelfand,3,14>.

lostemperor: <YouRang> your program seems to work fine from your calculations. Only some minor differences I talked you about (should not be a problem since it is within the 1 point margin). It is a great help for this predictioncontest and I hope to get it operated a.s.a.p (for Linares)! In the meantime, please keep your program running for Corus:)
Jan-26-06  YouRang: I'm glad to know you've gotten it to work for you and that it will help.

Let me know if any question/comments. :)

lostemperor: <YouRang> that's just it, I cannot operate your program yet. Can you give the final results after tomorrow's last round according to your program. I can easily check the results from your list and save me a lot of work. Thank you.
Jan-28-06  YouRang: <lostemperor> Can you explain what the problem you are having running the software? I thought you had it working. :-(

I will not have access to the contest software & files until Tuesday (it's at my office, and I am taking tomorrow off). I can run it then, but it would be better if you can get it to run at your site.
