Some years ago I came up with a new but simple system to calculate the final standings of a tournament including all players. This is how it goes:

For each correct standing you'll get a maximum amount of points. Each prediction deviation from the actual player standing in the tournament, will deduct one point from your total (ABSOLUTE RANKER).

In case of a shared player's standing the average standing counts (both actual and in your predictions).

The SQUARE RANKER, squares your predictions' deviations. Here only medals are awarded if the winner s is not the same person s as in the absolute ranker.

Same goes for the The PAIR BETTING RANKER compare all possible pair outcomes of the tournament participants.

The three best predictions will get Real Virtual Gold Silver and Bronze!

Note: only one set of medals is awarded (in the absolute ranker) unless another ranker produces a different winner.

Special thanks to <YouRang> who made a software to calculate these numbers.

Our new contest manager for game results prediction User: Golden Executive during the tournament also ([1-0], [1/2], [0-1])!

or predict the # of moves in User: ohiochessfan organized by <chessmoron>

Enjoy!

lostemperor: <dakgootje> I hope you don't mean that he lost to "<the Chessmaster personality named "Stanley," a random-moving chimp with a rating of 1>" ;)
Feb-21-06  dakgootje: what about User: DeepBlade ?

(look at his post at Teimour Radjabov )

I asked if hes dutch there, but at the time of writing this he hasnt answered yet

Feb-21-06  dakgootje: <lostemperor> No i would blame such things to the belgian people ;-)

Though of course they got good beer over there -.-

Feb-21-06  EmperorAtahualpa: That's what the Belgians do......blame it on the beer. :)
Feb-21-06  dakgootje: quote from Teimour Radjabov 's page:

<DeepBlade: <dakgootje> Yes I live in The Netherlands, but I was born in Turkey.>

Feb-21-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <so do we count him as being dutch or not? =p>

NO WAY! LOL

Just kidding... well since I'm a "Limburger" I'm as much a foreigner as is <DeepBlade> so I say count him in!

lostemperor: Wow, some surprising Linares (Morelia) halfway standings. Leko on first place. Who, besides <AdrianP>, would have thought of that? Perhaps a lot more folks, but perhaps no one else thought of putting him there after a disappointing Leko year.

Linares halfway standings

1. Peter Leko 5
2. Levon Aronian 4.5
3. Peter Svidler 4
4-5 Vassily Ivanchuk 3.5
4-5 Teimour Radjabov 3.5
6. Francisco Vallejo 3
7. Veselin Topalov 2.5
8. Etienne Bacrot 2

Adios Morelia. Hola Linares.

lostemperor: Some interesting statistics on the predictions halfway down Linares. With some data from YouRang's program on average ranking Report. A correct prediction will give you the maximum points on that player (8).

<=Player; Highest standing prediction; Lowest standing prediction; contestants with a correct (or close) prediction on that player so far.

<Peter Leko> Hi 1; low rank 8. Correct prediction <AdrianP> 1st, followed by <Joshka, Kevinacausa, LancelotduLac, viapori and WannaBe> 2nd.

<Levon Aronian> Hi 2 low 7. Correct prediction <djmercury>

<Peter Svidler> Hi 1; Low 5 Correct prediction <AdrianP, Ezzy, iron maiden, lostemperor madsberg Per3uTop, percyblakeney, Suenteus Po 147, Tassadar, TIMER, viapori, YouRang, WannaBe, LancelotduLac>

<Vassily Ivanchuk> Hi 1; low 6. Corrrect prediction <AdrianP, chessmaster pro, djmercury, LancelotduLac, peabody, petralovsky, Robin01, Troewa viapori>
