The 51st annual Hoogovens chess tournament was a category XIII event held in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands in 1989. 14 top chess players competed in a round robin format in the prestigious A event. The participants were (in order of ELO): Zoltan Ribli (2625), Gyula Sax (2610), Predrag Nikolic (2605), Rafael Vaganian (2600), Kiril Georgiev (2590), Ivan Sokolov (2580), John Van der Wiel (2560), Joel Benjamin (2545), Anthony Miles (2520), Vitaly Tseshkovsky (2520), Vishwanathan Anand (2515), Julio Granda-Zuniga (2500), Jeroen Piket (2500), and Rudy Douven (2445). The final saw a four-way tie for first place, among them young Anand and the top three rated players, all earning 7.5/13. The final standings and crosstable are as follows:
