The fifth Max Euwe Memorial Chess Tournament was organized by the Verenigde Spaarbank (VSB) and held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands from May 1st to the 13th, 1991. Breaking from the pre-established format, nine participants from the previous memorials, and the world champion, were invited to compete in the round robin event. This year's participants included (in order of ELO): Garry Kasparov (2800), Anatoli Karpov (2725), Mikhail Gurevich (2650), Valery Salov (2645), Nigel Short (2635), Jan Timman (2630), Viktor Korchnoi (2615), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2590), Johann Hjartarson (2535), and John Van der Wiel (2530). The average of the combined ratings of the participants qualified the tournament as a category XVI event. Kasparov had been invited and the event moved back to Amsterdam (from Rotterdam the previous year) to increase interest in the event. The world champion, upon his invitation, suggested that the organizers might do even better if they dropped Hjartarson and Van der Wiel, but was subsequently ignored. Some participating audience members were presented with a gift of the book Carel Mann after each round. The tournament ended with Short and Salov as the shared winners, edging out Kasparov and Karpov by half a point. The final standings and crosstable are as follows:

01 Salov 6/9 * 1 1 1

02 Short 6/9 * 1 1 1
