John F Barry was a Boston lawyer and strong amateur. He played in a number of cable matches for the US (Game Collection: Anglo-American Cable Matches, 1896-1911). He played at Cambridge Springs 1904, and predicted Marshall would win (http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/...). His photo from the Cleveland Public Library collection may be seen here: http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm4/item...

The match was played in Boston, home of Barry, for a stake of $2000. Games were scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, with sessions starting at 2 PM and ending at 10 PM. The first player to seven wins won the match.

Barry started well, drawing the first two games and winning the third. In Game 3, Showalter drifted into a bad opening position and lost the exchange to a fairly simple tactic. After that, Barry's technique carried him through to a won ending. Showalter bounced back in Game 4, driving Barry's king across the board into a mating net. For the rest of the match Barry was unable to keep up with Showalter, winning only one additional game (Game 11).
